After reading thar RAF Bomber Command will at last get a permanent memorial in Central London to recognise the achievments of the 55000 plus crew who died during WWII, I was astounded to read that the memorial will house a bronze sculpture of seven aircrew by Philip Jackson alongside include inscriptions from Sir Winston Churchill and carvings of Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought these two aircrafe were predominantly fighter aircraft.

I would have thought a better choice of aircraft would have been the Wellington, Blenhiem ot the iconic Lancaster.

I haven't read anywhere that there will be carvings of Spitfires or Hurricanes on the memorial. Spits and Hurris were used as bombers during World War 2 but not by Bomber Command.

I understand that part of the monument will be made from the melted down remains of a Halifax bomber which crashed during the war, killing the crew (the bomber was melted down during the war).

Good job, should have been done decades ago.

Wonder if the new Govt had anything to do with it? Lots of sensible things seem to be happening suddenly.

However 'During the war the command ensured the damage caused to London's squares, streets and parks from German bombs was not as extensive as it could have been.' is a new bit of spin!

Applying their usual high standards of journalism as always.

That shot dates from the early 1970s when the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight aircraft often wore some very spurious markings.

According to this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1278249/Af... Cameron 'stepped in' to the debate last month which, of course, was before he was in charge.

But it's the Daily Mail so, sort of, it would say that wouldn't it?

Anyway, long long long overdue and I look forward to being at the opening ceremony - should be well worth the trip from up here in 'Bomber County'.

I think Park has been taken down now. It was only ever a temporary arrangement.

I think the confusion about the Bomber Command Memorial and Spitfires and Hurricanes is caused by 2 different announcements on the same day. There will be a Bomber Command Memorial built out of stone, with words by Churchill etc and some form of sculputure made out of a melted down aircraft.

In the meantime somewhere in London (Hendon?) they are proposing a seperate feature which is building covered in Aliminum or similar which will contain a Spitfire.

Oh and Park as been removed from Trafalgar Sq, and a bronze of him is due to be placed permamently somewhere soon.

As I (nearly) said, Waterloo wink "A separate, permanent, bronze statue of Park will be erected in Waterloo Place on the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain on 15 September 2010."
