Why the hell have we been paying billions of pounds to support this stupid political experiment for:

Isn't their point that since we haven't contributed to their huge bailout we shouldn't ask them to help us?

Seems fair enough to me.

We still gave them E15 Billion. We will still have put a lot into the IMF.

Just because we wouldn't give them another E50 Billion. We don't have the money!

No great shock. It's a good reason to leave the EU though. I don't like seeing tax money going to pay for Spanish/Greek roads etc.

As per the above post, not a shock at all, I didn't expect anything else really. Go to some countries and look at the civil engineering around the place done with EU money, then come home and look at our sorry mess. Why don't we qualify?

If you venture up into the Scottish highlands, you'll see miles of pristine and recently laid blacktop.driving No idea who paid for all the various bits of it - British taxes or EU subs - but I was only pondering this the other day...

Two reasons spring to mind. The first is that British governments try to "buy" votes. Investing in infrastructure is more difficult to justify than investing in an increase in the Single Parent Allowance.

The second reason won't go down so well here, but I will say it anyway. In the 1980's, Maggie refused EC aid unless we(she) could control how it was spent. I can remember that £800 million of regional aid for Sunderland was turned down on this basis. That was a bad call, as it might have helped to alleviate the "Maggie" effect that we still see in some communities.

Look at the countless millions and millions of pounds, Billions over the years and look at what the Regional Development Agencies haven't done with it. Some nice stainless steel sculptures, some empty, overpriced industrial estates and then lots and lots of money for themselves and their cronies.

That's what happens to our EU money. It gets spunked like bukkake on totally useless community crap. rage

On that note, I heard that Mr Salmond thinks England needs to give him another few hundred million - surely if he wants independance then he can get his own cash.

The IMF doesn't matter it isn't an EU fund, it's international. If we are in trouble we will go to the IMF.

I would suspect any Eurozone bailout would be attached with some pretty unsavoury conditions such as joining the Euro, increasing EU contribution, or becoming a Vassal of France.

The taffs want more too. I'm so glad the Conservatives didn't need to go begging to these guys to get a majority as the price would have been more money for them (mind you are they given a fair 'share' of the UK's bounty? I guesstimate that they already get more than their fair share).

With their track record, you could probably expect that it wouldn't be very efficent, accountable or economically effective.

Leave the bloody foreigners at it, I say!

He can't raise his own cash as he doesn't have full tax raising powers.

I wonder how long he would stay in power in Scotland if he was given those powers.

Gee, so the EU governments bought up all our govt debt and thereby prevented the need for the BoE to implement QE!?

Hmm I think not. No help came from them when we could have done with it. Pathetic grandstanding by the rats on the shinking ship.
They can eat their own turd, there is plenty enough st here to contend with.

Why do you think that? The SNP would be unlikely to raise taxes as they know that it would be VERY unpopular with the low earners and they know there aren't enough high earners in Scotland to tax the rich. Although they are a party with socialist roots, they know that the best way to allow Scotland to grow would be to cut taxes for small businesses and encourage them to grow. I know the issue of oil revenue will always be a contentious one but IF Scotland controlled this then it COULD make a big difference. A decade of low business taxes would give Scotland the best chance of getting away from its dependence on public sector jobs and dole scroungers. Sadly, I don't think that it will happen due to how screwed up the public service is frown If this happened then it would be good for England and the rest of the UK too.

Sorry for the thread hijack!

The publshed figures would suggest that even after oil revenues are taken into account, Scotland still wouldnt be able to cover its expenditure each year, IIRC the figure of £4b a year was mentioned as the short fall
