Am I being overly PC or does that sound distinctly racist? Why mention the fact that they had "fallen in" with black men as opposed to any group of male criminals???

Really? Maybe I am being overly sensitive, it just seemed strange that he'd say "black men".....

That would have given me a chuckle in court.

Fair enough, he is an evil racist, what should he have said then?

Would you be offended if I called you a white man?

"You seem to have fallen in with a group of black men which seems to have been the beginning of your unfortunate adventures."

That would have sufficed.

I wouldnt be offended at being called a white man, I would if someone said that "falling in" with a group of white men was the start of my fall into crime.

The judges statement reads to me like "well, if you go and hang about with a group of black men you cant be surprised when you end up as a part of a criminal gang."

..And I’m sure that if the judge omitted the ‘black’ word, you would still be on here moaning that the judge, although he didn’t say is, inferred that the men were black...

Thought crimes......

Were the men black?

Yes

In that case surely it is simply a statement of fact?

Its only your hypersensitivity that is making it an issue - seeing it as a slur when it isn't.

Its the unfortunate way the public's mind has been bred to work.

If the 'group' had been, say Polish, and the judge said "You seem to have fallen in with a group of Polish men which seems to have been the beginning of your unfortunate adventures." would you be so worried?

Sounds to me like he was stating the absolute facts. They were men and black. I can see why people think it's not necessary to highlight, but the truth is there are a number of specific black gangs around that cause trouble. Equally there are white ones and they are distinct, so taken out of context it might seem unnecessary, but you probably had to be there to see it in context properly

Yes, I would say thats slightly unfair on Polish men.

I'm quite happy to admit that maybe I am being slightly over sensitive here, and it would appear judging by the reactions posted this far I am!

I'm with you.

He had no need to say "black". If he said "Polish" it would also have been unneeded.

If I heard of court proceedings down south where a lady got let off with warning that included "You seem to have fallen in with a group of Northern men which seems to have been the beginning of your unfortunate adventures", I would be a bit peeved (for about 3 seconds). Its not just using Northern as an adjective, its also implying that they are the problem, as if they are somehow worse people to be around than Southern men.

Slightly? That's understating it a bit.

People who think like that are the worst kind of racists: Those who see racism where it doesn't exist and then kick up a stink about it.

Yes, I was being sarcastic using "slightly".

I saw a film once where a woman fell in with a group of black men and she was most certainly in trouble at one or two points wink

To answer the OP in a more sensible manner, it appears to be a statement of fact. He became involved with a group of men, who were black (or is it 'dusky' in PH-speak now?) and he then had some unfortunate adventures with them.

There are more important things happening in this country to get wound up about. IMO of course.

Your not, it was wrong for him to highlight this just as its wrong that certain parts of the press keep mentioning Eton and the Burlington Club as a reason for us to have negative feelings towards the Conservatives.

Do i care either way? Not atall BUT some of the posters dismissing this have a field day when the press mention Cameron & Co's backgrounds in a negative light. I guess it depends on what suites your argumentsmile

I've just finished 7 years working in Africa. You won't BELIEVE how they refer to people!!! There's 'black' people, and there's 'white' people. Very simple of them and it makes perfect sense. They don't have all of this European PC shyte.
