612 Scagletti Crashed on MOT Test Drive
Discussion
This is exactly why I insist that my cars are never test driven by any garage before handing over the keys. I also take photos of the odometer and have a piece of tape holding on the speedo connection so I'll know if it's been broken.
I had my old 911 returned to me by a garage with 20 more miles on it and managed to negotiate a 50% deduction on my bill as I had stipulated that it was not to leave the premises. I've heard too many stories of wrecked engines/turbos from being thrashed from cold as they take it for a "test drive" to ensure everything is ok. If you can't trust a Ferrari dealership then who can you trust?

Huh? 20 miles is a reasonable amount for a mechanic to test drive your car.I had my old 911 returned to me by a garage with 20 more miles on it and managed to negotiate a 50% deduction on my bill as I had stipulated that it was not to leave the premises. //I'm sorry Mr BrewsterBear we couldn't determine whether it was your driveshaft or wheel bearing that was causing the noise as you wouldn't let us drive it. So we replaced everything. Except your speedo.//

Not when I expressly forbid them to take it out. It was in for a service, so a service is what I wanted. Not a mechanic's opinion on whether anything else wanted doing after ragging it for 20 miles from cold. If they think something needs doing they should pick up on inspection. If I had a vibration I would have explained that to them. Simples.//I'm sorry Mr BrewsterBear we couldn't determine whether it was your driveshaft or wheel bearing that was causing the noise as you wouldn't let us drive it. So we replaced everything. Why would a brand new car need an MOT?

There's a two-year waiting list for a car like this, so the guy will have a wait a bit before he can get behind the wheel of that kind of motor again.'
No he won't he can just look in the classifieds again. BrewsterBear said:

tbox Corsa comes back from a basic service with 30 miles on it and inexplicably half a tank of fuel missing...(30 miles = about 3 litres...)

There are garages you can trust, the problem is finding them. I use a little two-man local and would happily trust them with a fezza, (if I had such a thing), because they've demonstrated that (a) they genuinely care about doing a good job and (b) have earned my trust over a period of years.I had my old 911 returned to me by a garage with 20 more miles on it and managed to negotiate a 50% deduction on my bill as I had stipulated that it was not to leave the premises. Larger franchised places then I agree 100%.

I had a Mitsubishi Galant 2.5V6 a few years back, I took it to garage for mot, it went in with 3/4 tank it came out with just under 1/4 tank and 78 miles, I knew full well how fast that car would of had to go to do that sort of mpg on V power.
I collected the car and the owner passed the comment on how it goes quite well for such a big large barge, I then noticed my fuel missing, 78 extra miles on the clock, needless to say I didn't pay for the MOT.
Regardless of what car it is, if you take a car into a garage unless you have specifically asked for a road test, or the work being carried out requires a road test, then your car should not be driven more than into the garage and out of the garage.

blimey, that's great valueRemember I had an MOT on my Elise (with loud exhaust) and the garage was about 20m in front of the waiting room on a large one way street.
So, he obviously drove it right the way round the one way street (500m). I could hear every single turn of the engine with that exhaust, the dick head!
