Looks like the oil level gauge is a bit facetious. To start with, it was jumping up and down depending on rev. Now it is just stuck (I mean it does not even move at all) in the red area, where it definitely should not be according to the handbook. When checking the oil level at the engine, it looks ok though. Has anybody experience to share on that matter? It looks worrying (you sure don't want to run low on oil with these engines) but ... is this gauge known to be un-reliable?

Sorry to be patronising if you are doing this correctly, but I may be able to help you if not. The gauge will only give you the correct reading when the car is stationary, on a flat road, fully warmed engine and at idle. They are of zippo use (and were never meant to be used) when moving (they will go all over the place like this). Basically park the car on the flat in your drive, leave it idling and wait till it's hot - this will give you a true reading. Enjoy

Thanks. You did not patronise me cos I only got the car 2 days ago and it's tough to offend me in the mechanical area since I know close to zero. A very helpful dealer gave me the long version of your email. Interesting system ...

When reading the Dipstick make sure you get the right reading as oil seems to smear up the stick, making it look fuller than it is.
I always top up the oil and look through the rear window at the gauge. But watch out it is highly sensitive, only a few 'drops' will make it move once you are near the correct level.
