I have been offered a month's work as a contractor, but have never done contracting before. i don't really understand how it all works.

Could anybody give me a simple guide to what's what with the above?

for a months work you;d be best as using an umbrella company

If you want to contract long term you are best setting yourself up as a LTD.

For a month could you not work as a sole trader.

Probably the easiest option.

Is it not doubtful the "employer" will allow it? They will likely insist on dealing with a Ltd Co?

Supose it depends on the size of the company and how important the op's work is? A larger co is likely to have stringent rules in place as policy?

Start as you mean to go and all that and maybe the month will be extended?
