Chaps,

I'm curious.

I've just had a gander at the way we currently buy our leccy and gas (and, as usual, discover that the current supplier is robbing us blind and haven't told us about another tarrif they have which will save us over £350 a year, but there we are ... )

I asked how much energy we use per year. The figures are 10161kw/yr of gas and 3771kw/yr of electricity. That's for two people (with frequent guests) in a three-bed victorian terrace in London. Gas central heating and water heating, electric oven and gas hob.

Do those energy use figures seem low or high to the assembled masses? (They seem quite high to me, hence my curiosity.)

Seems low usage to me, I'm sure mine is higher.

It's going to be a lot higher this year too, where the hell is summer?

Low to average by my workings. Gas is similar to mine - considering its a Victorian gaff. Electric is lower, but I have a big plasma, fish tanks and several laptops.

What does that work out as a monthly/quarterly payment?

Fairly small 2 bed house, built in 1991, but detached so sheds a lot of heat.

No gas supply, spend approx £90 a month on electricity.

Chaps,

Thanks. Sounds like we aren't being ruinously profligate with our energy use then. It's an old house, and despite as much insulation and draught-proofing as I can manage it's still far from being modern. Single-glazed sash windows. Brick walls with no cavity insulation. BUT the boiler is a new (efficient) one, and we have a log fire which we use quite a lot as well for heating, which will balance it out a bit as well.

Can't remember. It was about £530pa for gas and the same (ish) for leccy, so about £1060 a year, so >CountsOnFingers< £88/month. That's now nearer £350 each, so down to £58/month. Crumbs, that's £30 a month less. Perhaps I can afford an iPhone after all ... smile

4 bed Bovis detached house £100 a month for gas and elec with E-on. In Devon not that that should have any bearing.

2 adults one six year old work from home, dishwasher on at least once a day. GCH, flame effect fire, water heating and elec hob and oven.

Now, water, don't get me started.......furious

2 bed flat (~4yrs old), 1 person.

I use approx 9kwh/day, which works out at around £45/month for electricity. 4.5kwh of that goes on heating water though!

All electric house, 400 sqm, as it's just coming into winter the three of us are using 14kW hours a day, which will cost about 45 pounds for the month. When there were only two of us in summer the monthly bill was just over twenty quid.

That's the benefit of solar hot water and a hot water heat pump - on average about 2kW hours a day for all hot water.

I've got a couple of log burners as well, and I'll probably spend a couple of hundred pounds on wood as well this winter.

Go onto economy 7 if you can and run all your heavy loads overnight and you will save. I run a currentcost monitor with some reasonable (but buggy) software to monitor costs and have provent that my overnight use is sufficient to save money (nearly 50%).

Mine works out at about 7500kwh Gas, and 1600kwh Elec so far.

I actually pay (via DD) for 11,500 Gas and 2,400 Elec, so I'm actually in a fair amount of credit with them at the moment. Once my credit levels reach £200+ I'll probably bring my DD down a bit to match my useage.

Edit: Just the two of us living in a 1 bed flat, although it's a very old conversion and extremely poorly insulated.
