subtle tuning....
Discussion
I bought a Mk1 focus RS about 3 months ago and im now considering making a few changes as im getting a little bored of its performance, but want to keep it as i love the thing, so naturally i thought of a few upgrades.. my knowlogde of tuning cars is fairly limited so i was wondering if any of you guys know the pros and cons for the things im considering doing??
Im thinking of putting in a Baliey Motorsport dump valve ( purely fot the way it sounds!)
A K&N Generation 2 induction kit (hopefully to let it breather better??)
EBC Yellow stuff pads(im suffering from serious brake fade after 10mins of driving hard) and a new set of boots for the front...im prepared to pay £400..was thinking toyo's maybe??
Thanks in advance

I love dump valve sounds, but i'm a chav at heart so i wouldn't trust my opinion.
OP, yellow stuffs are pretty serious pads, we didn't even put them on the Ferrari's at work unless they were going to be regularly tracked. I'd say get green stuffs then if they fade aswell then get red stuffs.
Also i'd recommend joining focusrsoc.com and some other focus rs clubs as they are going to know what has tested and produced the best results for your money.
one other thing. I want your car

same...im clearly gonna get gunned down for this but i just like it....im sure everyones made a embrassing purchase 'just because they liked it'thanks for the advice on the pads....i check out the rs owners club..thought id try here before signing up to yet another internet forum!
i suppose a better question would have been 'will installing an aftermarket dump vavle and induction kit have a detrimental effect on my car's performance'???
Spend it on stuff that actally serves a purpose. Bailey valves are rubbish.
If you're getting brake fade that bad, get the fluid changed out for something good, braided brake lines, and a decent set of pads. EBC yellow stuff aren't bad, I had them on my R33GTR briefly and had no problems, and that was running a fair crack more power (and weight) than an FRS, didn't have any problems on track either.
A decent exhaust with less restrictive cats is certainly a good idea, and a decent induction kit will do no harm provided it's properly shielded from the engine bays heat and fed cold air. Personally I'd just chuck a decent panel filter in and remove any restrictions from the pipe it's fed by.
Remap it, perhaps with some more boost (I've no idea about FRS tuning but assume they can take a bit more boost) and you'll be surprised how much of a difference a few smallish mods makes.

As far as I am aware dump valves physically dump all of the pressure from the turbo hence worse performance.
I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong though.
On the K&N front, Don't just whack an air filter on (depending on the location) it will suck in hot air again reducing performance. Maybe a K&N panel filter or a cold air induction kit would be better.

ECU tweak (Mountune?), braided brake lines, and greenstuff pads. If it were my FRS, that's all I'd look at really.
Then again, I understand that some Mk 1 FRS's suffer badly from torque-steer even with the standard 212 ponies. So I'm not sure if the ECU tweak would need some suspension mods, or whether some more major adaptions to the drivetrain would be needed?

What do you actually want?
It sounds like you want to sound fast but actually go slower.
Get a decent cold air induction, remap and 5.1 fluid. Then get 4 tyres, and if you still need them, green or red stuff pads. You will never, ever go fast enough in a FRS to get the best out of yellow stuff - unless you track it regularly. If you do track it, you really would realise that a dump valve will actually give you the track to yourself as all the other drivers will be creased up laughing.

Dump valves are actually designed to vent the compressed air into the atmosphere when the throttle body is closed, otherwise the air bounces back into the turbo compressor, stalls it and is then expelled back out the air intake. Without a dump valve the compressor stall can damage the turbo bearings and eventually knacker it, particularly if you are running high boost pressure. Hence why I'm just about to fit one.I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong though.

Don't get me wrong, I am by no means an expert, but if a car without a dump valve is at risk of damaging its turbo, wouldn't all turbo charged cars come with a dump valve? Seems like all the major car companies are getting it wrong then?Gassing Station | General Gassing [Archive] | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
