Right, second poker night amongst friends tonight and out of seven of us I've just dropped out leaving 3 still playing. I need to learn to win - nothing more nothing less. I'm new to the game so interested to hear of any tips, hints or advice around the game.

As always, thanks in advance.

With mates, and without forgetting you're playing with your mates and it's a laugh, you can always recoup your losses by stitching them up at the bar, in the same way that you will be stitched up at the bar if you win. Otherwise, learn some simple maths. Then decide on how much of a gambler you are.

1. Play position
2. Be aggressive
3. NEVER call with crap, only bet with it.

Be unpredictable. Call and raise bets on stty hands, but also fold when it's necessary. Keep them guessing and they'll never be able to work out what you do. For example, a mate of mine always calls up to the turn if he's got a pocket - it's easy indication. By the same token if I have pocket Kings I may call pre-flop, raise on the flop, check the turn and then push hard on the river - or I'll raise pre-flop, call the flop, raise hard on the turn and check the river.

Yup, but the blind was getting big so decided to put it all on a pair of jacks.

Remember that AK is known as the 'Kournikova' - looks great, but doesn't win much.

its poker with mates - ignore all the above and just have a laugh. You cant play "properly" with people that dont know much themselves, have a beer and a laugh.

(i took almost a year off work to play and on the odd occasion where i bumped into a "non-player" at the casino i always lost when they called with 7/2 and "good feeling"!)

Sorry - I've got to stop posting when I've had a few to drink!

To make sense of that post, pocket Kings are a pair of Kings dealt to you straight away. Pre-flop is before the first 3 cards come out, and the flop itself is those 3 cards. The turn is the 4th card revealed by the dealer, and the river is the 5th. Checking means you don't bet anything, and obviously raise means chuck some money into the pot.

Hope that clears it up!

As Tiggsy has said above, not much of this is relevant if you are just playing for a laugh with your mates. It's worth learning a few things though if you play a more serious game in the future. A lot of people who play have picked up how to play on their own through experience, you could go on all day explaining about different situations so there's not much point.

The best advice on poker is try not to get frustrated and play recklessly if you are having a bad run, you will just lose more. Be patient.

Not a good idea to check the turn with KK unless you flop a set. There's a strong chance that giving a free card will allow somebody to fill a drawing hand. You should always make them pay to see a card and you'll grow the pot further.

I played in a game the other day where the big blind had KK and checked to the river

After flopping quads

If it is between mates then just have fun.

Don't do the same things each game i.e. fold right away with a poor hand etc. so that they can't predict how good or bad your hand is based upon your actions.
