Car building shows a' la American Hot Rod
Discussion
The "Customs My Ride"/"Street Customs" show has its moments, some of the stuff they knock out is interesting but some would even shame the local youths in McDonald's car park.
"Overhauling" is perhaps the best of the American vehicle make-over shows, Chip Foose's style seems mix the old and new successfully, the only problem with the show is the ridiculous hidden camera parts where they pretend to steal the car from the 'mark', but that's why the Good Lord invented the Fast-Forward button on the Sky+ remote.
Mark Evans' "A Car/Plane/Spaceship/Westfield/4x4/etc is Born" series are a bit more nuts'n'bolts rather than flash paintwork, although getting slightly dated now. You can even check out the back of my head in the penultimate episode of "A Racing Car is Born".

I've found that the best of these type of shows is Biker Build off. It's bike based (obviously) rather than car based, but the builders they use really do some extraordinary things.
Yep I'd definately agree with that"Camper Van & Beetle crisis" were both on (and are repeated) on Discovery I think a few years back. Deal with the complete done in a garden shed restorations of old VW's and very much worth a look if your into that kind of thing. British as well so less trashy than some of the US offerings, I think they did 2nd versions that didn't live up to the first but never saw those.
Guys - you can't possibly leave out "A car is Born"!
MArk Evans, a true greasy overalled geek in the making turns his skills and the TV production company's budget into restoring and rebuilding a great selection of motors, including an AC Cobra replica, Jag E Type, MG, Range Rover/Land Rover conversion. Then goes on to a light plane and then a chopper (both the flyign variety and a Harley, and trike).
I'm not sure if you can get all these on DVD, but I used to love it when Discovery would put all one series on single day. I would be stuck on the sofa!
Edit - of course I missed Truckosaurus's mention above, Dur!

There's also the series filmed in Barry Grants hot hot rod shop where they build a series of differnet SMC's (Super Muscle Cars) and they auction them, called Wrecks to Riches (I think), it gets repeated on discovery all the time.
Wreck to Riches USA.Excellent program, they have built some awesome cars!

Not to be confused with Wrecks to Riches with Vicki Butler Henderson and Dominic Littlewood, where they buy and repair salvaged cars for people.

Dam right you can. I've got the box set - autographed by the man himself
http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/510015/Discovery-He...
Yup it's only Play.com at £65.
Must be honest though, I'd be surprised if I paid that much - though I probably bought it perhaps 5yrs ago, maybe more, so price may have changed.
Good value though, and good fun - especially as you don't get all the commerical breaks!

Love the show, really interesting to hear what problems he encounters and the tips and tricks he uses to overcome them.
