Should our PM be able to speak propply?
Discussion
Yes, there's no need to dumb down, he is supposed to be one of the elite, highly articulate, well educated leaders.
Maybe tenuously connected - I heard a girl on the radio yesterday who was talking about Kevs/Barrys/Neds cruising and she mentioned 'the majority of Neds do X' and 'the other majority of Neds do Y'. That made me chuckle.

I am more impressed by his apparent ability to answer questions without prompting, notes etc.. as he has done a few times at press conferences. He really seems to just speak from his heart, which is a fascinating quality - he does appear to believe what he is saying as well - he's not just reading out what some scriptwriter has produced. He actually seems to want to make the country better.
I could be wrong with the above mind, but that's how I've seen it so far.

It's all a general dumbing down that purposely went on through Noo Labour and you've noticed... it is continuing under the new honeymoon set.
The PC brigade is alive and well, and make no mistake it will carry on under Cameron and Clegg - already proven by this thread.
It comes from the advisorial PC level in order to make them appear to the populace as if they are 'ordinary', like you and me.
They are not!!
If you think they are, you're wet behind the ears. Some of the women in this government when you look at their backgrounds are as high as you can get on the politically correct level. Be warned!
You say you want someone who is educated... well, it should tell you the exact opposite if they say 'propply'!
I noted even David Dimbleby on QT the other evening said 'dunno'.
They know the correct pronunciations. So think about it, why do they do it incorrectly? These are not 'nervous' types, who freeze in front of an audience. They thrive on an audience.
It's the dumbing down culture, and it's set to continue.

Look what happened when you get someone who comes across really well and is a really nice man. He gets more votes than he should and becomes deputy PM. I don't want a PM who can work the camera and sing while dancing.
Well, being realistic - he didn't get enough votes to be PM, and came last out of the main parties, but happened to end up being King Maker. In fact, IIRC the Libs got less votes this time around than they did the last time.Edited by ShadownINja on Saturday 15th May 14:13

Grapples my friggin grapenuts it does, IT'S PROPERLY NOT PROPPLY YOU MUPPET!
it's only a phonological sympton of his sociolect. Agree its not perfect but its preferable to 99.99% of the rubbish that most UK residents seem to use as the English language. (have you heard how they sound in part of wales? it doens't sound like English at all!)ShadownINja said:
Could be wrong but I seem to recall someone saying that the upper class don't care how they talk because they are upper class, whereas the middle class wannabes will try to talk proper to appear higher class.
Very much so. The upper classes don't say "pardon?" they say "what?", just as one example. Our Victorian middle classes, fruitlessly trying to social climb, invented much of what we think of as "manners". They were amusingly far from emulating the upper classes, who of course they never met, and it is worth finding good books on the subject just for the irony. I think my most recent was "Watching the English" by Kate Fox, though it is too variable to really recommend. And, the author comes across as a frightful snob, so she is probably middle class herself! But, yes, Dave's false persona for the "chip on shoulder" brigade is pretty insulting. I'd rather Boris called me an "Oik" to my face, tbh.
