There is lots to consider, I have met VW guys, and the good ones were on around 40k.

I am sure the best in the company will be on maybe twice that, but there will be plenty hovering around 30, any less than that and they'll fire you and get someone who can smile

ive been told they could earn up to about £220 a new car, with all extras, inc finance/insurance and dealer products, but not sure how realistic that is.
and also i hear they have alot of repeat business, so you would technically need to buid up your personal client base.
also if someone orders a new car, its could about 20 odd weeks to be delivery, so you wont get paid that deal for 20 weeks!

I would say you should listen to what they say.

However I would be surprised if £220 was the max per car, I remember taking £350 on some cars with all the finance products, and a decent chunk of profit in the deal.

Don't worry about repeat business, its a small percentage and takes years to get, so ignore it. And yes building an order bank of new cars is how its done, usually around the new reg dates so you have 20 cars all coming the same month!

Would you be selling used aswell?

That's interesting about the lag of getting paid, nightmare if you move jobs! How on earth do they ever hire people from other dealers ?

well if you can sell used as well then you get paid instantly more or less. Plus often you will get a bonus paid to you for the first 3 months to compensate for not having an order bank.

Now I'm probably being very naive, here, but to me, that doesn't sound like much of a package for the job. I always assumed they would be on more. I would even go as far as to say some "deserve" a higher basic.
Surely the company car isn't much of a perk, given the associated tax either?
Makes me realise why the guy that sold me my Golf phoned up a couple of weeks later explaining they had made a calculation error to and wanted me to pop back in and hand over an extra £500 to cover it. If I didn't, he said they would take it out of his wages...!

Its a job where you can earn decent money (lets not forget £40k is well above average) without any papers.

And if you are very good you probably could earn double that. higher basics promote lazy sales staff. I work in a place with higher basic lower bonus, and its full of cruisers, there aren't any cruisers when you're taking home £870 if you don't sell any cars.

The basic pay is poor, like recruitment consultants I suppose, if it’s all commission / sales based you could start counting your chickens before they have hatched, after all its not 'guaranteed' money.

IMO, no car salesman has every convinced me to buy a car I wasn’t going to in the first place smile like estate agents, money for opening doors....literally.

The biggest difference between good and bad imo is work rate and the ability to sell a product and not just give it away. As a sales manager I hate lazy salesman who then at the end of the month moan that they have been unlucky!

In reply to your comment I think a number of people are like yourself and I have come across them a number of times and you are right, you buy the car not the sales pitch but a number of people can be sold to and thats where you see the difference between good sales staff and bad ones.

I agree with you on that, a number of people i know have gone into a dealership wanting a 'run-around' and come out with something quite different thanks to the sales staff, rightly or wrongly they are only doing their job.

Regarding repeat buyers, my Dad got poor service from a local dealer about 6 years ago, so he went to one slightly further afield and since then has bought 2 new cars off them, plus he has them serviced at that one.

One poor salesman can really put you off a place for good.

I didnt think they would be anywhere near the quoted figures. I'm sure I posed the question not so long back on here regarding premium marque dealers and was told that £30k was about the norm and good ones would be on a little more, not twice the quoted amount?

Okgo, I know you used to be in the Car game, whats your industry now?

typically around 60 - 80 on polo to 400ish on touareg. profit is usually tight enough on volume models although selling finance will make a good difference. delivery time can be a bit of a killer 8-18 weeks depending on model. also depends what system they use for part exchanges. preferably short washout.

Yeah, I believe you have. The only thing which puts me off car sales is weekend working. I appreciate that you get a day off in the week but do you get any full weekends? It seems as though the money is there if you work hard.

Erm well I think I had a few full weekends in my year or so there. Not many though.

I got thursday off, and worked 1 in 4 sundays too. Not ideal. Hence the change really, its a lot of work to earn your money compared with other sectors. And also I didn't want to stay on a 10k basic for 5 years before I made business manager or something, not worth it for me. Was good fun at times though.

Perhaps try property? normally get every other weekend off, and has the potential to be a big earner.

A mate of mine went from BMW to selling houses in a very nice bit of west london, and he is doing very well indeed.

And there was always the odd huge paycheck dolled out at the dreaded foxtons. A chap I worked with took home £13k in april this year, he is a 26 year rold south african.
