Afternoon

The wife is having a problem with her Ford Focus. Whenever she puts it in reverse ans starts to move the gear pops out.

Do she need a new gearbox?

Thanks

If the Gearbox is an IB5 box, it is most likely the reverse gear is worn due to excessive crunching of the gear when entering reverse.

If it's an MT box, it sounds like the Dog teeth on reverse are bent.

It will cost around £500-£600 fitted.

Put it into reverse, and slightly push the clutch whilst pulling it back even more, should hook in smile

Well, what Engine does the car have? I'm pretty sure I will know.

EDIT: Not like it matters. The Gearbox needs some work done on it. It's a shame you don't live closer to me, as I could send you down to my Dads workplace and get you the work done for a discounted price hopefully and he does do a fantastic job.

If it is a 1.6, then it uses the IB5 Gearbox.

If you are wanting to get it repaired and you think you may still have the car when it passes the 80k mile mark, then ask the Gearbox Technician to also replace the differential bearings for upgraded items as these break up at around the 70-80k mark, so you may as well get them changed too as the box will have to come apart anyway, and they are an inexpensive item so should not add that much more to the bill.

As I said before though, take it to a Gearbox Technician, and NOT the average mechanic. At least with a Technician, they know what they are doing (Although there are some bad ones out there, so look out.) and some offer warranties too. My Dad would charge around £500-600 for the Job, and that is with a warranty, Gearbox re-paint and he is also Qualified by ZF themselves, so you should not expect to pay anymore then that to be honest.

Good luck, and I hope that whoever repairs it does a good job.

+1 I find 90% of the time this works, or putting the gears into neutral, depressing the clutch and then pressing down the clutch, waiting a second or two and then putting it in.

One of these 2 options have never failed me. (Be causcious about using the second one, its possible to crunch the gears quite easily)
