hi there. looking to spend maybe 5K on a fast car which is as new as possible. asking alot i know. mpg is not important. any/all cars considered except huge cars due to country lanes round my way being very narrow.

cheers for any input!

Are you asking what fast car depreciates quickest once you purchase it?

For what you're after I guess a jap car would do you. Or possibly a french hot hatch?

You need to give a bit more detail on seats/doors/style etc.

For your budget I'd probably go with a DC2 ITR, Celica GT4 or 190 or 200sx S14A or Corrado or Polo GTi or... (you get my point)

pretty much open for body style/doors etc though rwd/awd would be a plus. like the idea of a turbo too. just don't want anything too old that would be on its last legs but still fast enough to be fun. looking at the mo at honda accord type-r or subaru wrx etc. hope this helps.

As soon as he said MPG was not important, this was what popped into my head.

yep came off nights and looked at various things from skylines (R33 variety circa 96-97), a 2001 m5 that needs a touch up and a mitsubishi legnum among other things. currently in germany where i get half price fuel so the mpg is not too much.

have gone off the rx-8's as the short journey effects on the engine sound too disastrous and why on earth are no other manufacturers using it if it is any good?

another thing i should have mentioned earlier to throw into the mix is that i will need to get some lhd headlights for the car i buy to register it in germany. i have enquired for a skyline from a guy who has one here and he said he had to get his modded or pay a thousand euros for new ones. have tried e-bay germany but no luck. e-bay usa would do it or japan i suppose but its something else to factor in.

cheers for th input!

Mk2 Mr2 Turbo - should get a tidy revision 4, maybe revision 5 if you are lucky for £5k. Shed loads of fun and still ok on fuel surprisingly.

done a bit more research and the old skylines are brilliant but a bit too old really. something after 2000 or newer would be better. plus am i getting old or does it seem like the golden age of fast motors was 1990-2000 or is it just me?

The RX8 is the answer to this thread.

I wasn't aware that short journeys were any worse for wankle engines than any other type of engine. They must warm up pretty quickly, after all, because there's not much mass to heat.

yes

Unfashionable coupes and hot hatches are the way to go - Citroen C4 VTS, Stilo Abarth, Hyundai Coupe, Chrysler Crossfire.

But none of the cars on that list look as good or handle as well as the RX8. Leggy 2004 cars down to £4k in the PH classifieds.

I'll take three and sell them on for the usual £8k+ levels in that case. biggrin

I wouldn't fixate on the newness. Not wishing to bash the RX8 - it is a logical response to the thread - a friend has one that's produced far more issues than my 15 year old TVR ever did. Maybe she's been unlucky, but the point remains newness doesn't automatically guarantee reliability.

I'd just look at it for the budget and find something old enough to have stopped depreciating. The usual Integra Type R, Corrado VR6, Fiat Coupe 20VT and Alfa GTV V6 spring to mind.

I'm surprised you mentioned this warm hatch before the Clio 172/182 hot hatches. And before the Golf GTi Mk2, Golf VRS, MX5 1.8s, Octavia 1.8T VRS, 205 1.9 GTi (you get my point)

You can get a 2000 Fiat Coupe 20VT within your budget. I don't think anything beats it for bangs per buck (yes, biased). I did look at the RX-8 at the time I bought my Coupe but the couldn't live with the MPG or lack of torque (awaits backlash!) much as I love the design and RWD. The Coupe is slightly faster and has bags of torque, especially in third, and is surprisingly reliable (awaits second backlash!). HTH.

You are tantilisingly close to entering Impreza P1 ownership on that budget. One of those would make an excellent country lane companion
