Restarting after a long sit

If it's a long sit then all of the oil has probably drained down into the sump away from all of those things which need a protective film on them.
I would take out all of the spark plugs and put a squirt of oil in each cylinder just to lube the upper cylinders. Then probably turn it over by hand with the plugs still out to coat all of the bores prior to start up.
Next I'd turn her over with the plugs still out to let the oil pump prime the whole system. Then replace the plugs and go for an actual start. Assuming of course that you've done all of the other bits and bobs, oil change water check, etc.
The big fuel hose from the tank to the pump (low pressure) would be worth a quick inspection.
When the ignition goes on then the fuel pump builds up system pressure before cutting out. Might be worth pressurising the system like this, without getting the engine running, and doing a quick visual on any fuel leaks The fuel itself is probably scrap if it's stood for more than about 6 months.
Regarding actually driving her I'd want a good inspection of the tyres first, especially at what was the bottom point when it was standing. Look out for side wall cracking tread deformation, etc. If in doubt then a set of tyres would cost about £300, cheaper than any alternative consequences.
I'm sure someone will identify some more checks. Hope it goes well.

regards to the long sit, the engine hasnt been run properly for around 3 and a half years. attempts were made but unsucessful. I have been checking the engine bay for small leakages. When I rolled it out of the garage onto my drive on saturday to get it on ramps and have a good look underneath and unsieze the clutch. I also dribbled a small amount of oil in through the oil filler camp. And then rocked it very slightly to see if the engine moved free, it did, quite well considering how long the sit has been. Also because my drive slopes away from the garage i was able to test the brakes. the pipes seem in good nik although new brake pads would help, I had one of the wheels off and i checked the surface of them and they werent the best i have seen. with the radiator i will most probably drain and refresh the coolant. I might also give the distributer cap and cables a going over to make sure that no mice have chewed through them since they decided to make a nest out of my air filter !!! little sods.
