we have just cancelled our trip to Thailand due to the trouble. Any suggestions on where to go instead? We were planning to fly on the 28th of May.

Bad idea - since the Consulate announcement and subsequent withdrawal I suspect any travel insurance won't be valid in Thailand. Worth checking, but I'd be very cautious.

I do agree though that all of the trouble seems to be in Bangkok, so if you can get to any of the beach resorts without going through BKK you should be fine.

Depends on what you want:-
- Cambodia is a great call for sightseeing;
- Malaysia is on our list to go to - Langkawi is supposed to be a stunning beach resort;
- Not a big fan of Bali - very much like the SE Asian equivalent of the Balearic resorts - lots of bars and lots of hassle from shopkeepers etc. Ubud in the highlands though is very nice...

Or...
- Japan?
- Mauritius?
- Vietnam - beaches AND sightseeing. Definitely worth a visit IMHO, albeit the people in the North aren't quite as friendly as your usual SE Asians...

Malaysia - Cheaper than Thailand for most things, much less busy, people far more friendly, better food etc...

I'd chance it. Like I do every time I go away.

Is Thailand is really out of the question? - I have customers travelling to Phuket and Koh Samui that have been routed through Kuala Lumpa or Singapore and had a fantastic time and have said if you didn't know what was happening in Bangkok you would be none the wiser!!

However, that said if you want to stay away completely I highly recommed Langkawi - Stayed at the Dati and it is stunning - set in a rain forest, monkeys running round and service that is unbelievable. You could maybe look into spending a few days in Kuala Lumpa and then fly in to Langkawi to relax.

I was there a couple of years ago when it was all going on, never really stops to be honest it just doesn't usually make the news. We were on one of the first flights to arrive after they gave the airport back.

So long as you don't go into Bangkok then you would probably never know it was going on. I think I heard on the radio earlier that the protesters are pulling out of Bangkok, don't quote me on that.

Edited because of a typo.
