Hi guys, planning on selling my current car, it has about a months worth of MOT on it, am I right in thinking I can take it up there anytime and get them to stick a year on it?

As I think it will be an easier sale with 1 years ticket.

OK.

I've also got a private plate to take off the car, in your opinion would you take the plate off first, then get the new MOT?

The insurance also runs out in a day or so, so that will need to be extended to do all of the abvoe before it can go up for sale!!

Lengthy process.

Stuff like this is a pain!

The plate will take a good few weeks to take off; you may even find past the date of the MOT. This is the DVLA we're talking about here. You can't actually put the new plate on the car til you receive the amended tax disc. No idea what they're delivery times at the moment are but the couple of times I've done it it's been a few weeks.

So, get MOT now, just ensure you have the change over document for the plate so new owner will be hunky dory smile

OK.

MOT first.

Extend the insurance for a bit.

Apply to put plate on retention, then get that all done.

Put car up for sale!!

Lets hope the tax doesn't run out in the time it takes to do that! Be cheaper to keep it if I have to tax it again frown

Surely the buyer will pay you for the tax, else you can whip the disc out and send it back for a refund corresponding to the number of complete months remaining. (So if you tax it now for 6m then you'll get 5 back if you sell before end of May, or 4 if you sell during Apr.)

Well maybe, I will say I can tax it if you give me the cash, but cars are a lot more attractive to the buyer with 6 months as opposed to one month. Still, I will see how I get on with time scales.

You can get up to 13 months because they can backdate it.
