As a spin-off from the 'Evil eerie looking inanimate objects (houses etc)' thread, what are your irrational fears and phobias?

I'll admit to three:

1) Large ships in dry dock; the thought of being here terrifies me!:

2) Being around 'big things' that could start up, even when I know that they won't. I know, it doesn't make sense, even to me. As an example, having to do something like this would st me up:

3) I have no real fear of heights or falling, but as soon as a friend or family member is standing on the edge of something, such as a cliff or tall building, I have an urge to pull them back. As if I don't trust anyone other than myself not to fall off!

Apart from that little trio, I'm mostly sane. biggrin

What are your irrational fears and phobias?

A phobia is by definition irrational, is it not?

Not always - some are quite rational. Acrophobia for example - if you're stood on a very high object the risk of falling to your death can be very real.

Fear of buttons on the other hand...

My 2yo niece is scared of balloons (party balloons etc), we went to a family wedding on saturday and I could see her having a glance at the balloons above our table every so often to make sure they weren't coming close to her..

My 23 year old Mrs has the same phobia. Bloody wierdo.

Did give us a giggle when I brought her a new suitcase she wanted and filled it with helium balloons that attacked her when she opened it hehe

After watching Steven Kings IT i've had a big fear of clowns! When i was working in a bar there was a fancy dress party in, at which point there was a clown and i point blank refused to serve that side!

Scared of spiders... But seems to have whittled down since i've grown up a bit...

I have a fear of the corner on a road i am quite frequently on, but that was because i have had an accident on that road, therefore snail pace it!

Going through very narrow tunnels underground (i.e. smaller than being able to walk through upright). I think it's just because of the feeling of lack of control if it collapsed (not that you'd have any chance anyway, but more the feeling of being able to escape helps I guess).

Geese and seaweed.

In fact, the thought of a goose covered in seaweed is my worst nightmare.

I have a phobia of vomit, not just myself myself but other people being sick as well, it genuinely terrifies me. I can't even be in the same room as someone who feels sick just in case!

Ohh thats kind of worrying I'd assumed she would grow out of it..

My dad bought my mum a suitcase for christmas when i was a kid, my mum ran off crying wittering something about him trying to insinute (sp) that he wanted rid of her... (maybe thats her irrational fear) Their were tickets inside it for a holiday, she never opened it.

So be careful what you buy women as no matter what it is it might set off the mental.

My older sister is scared of butterflys, I used to put them in her room when I was a lad biggrin Yes I was mean..

OK well I guess I was going to have to admit it at some point...

I am scared of the sea.... I love being on boats, I can water ski/jetski whatever, but as soon as I have to be in the water more than about 100 metres from shore, I st myself. Simply cannot handle it.

I guess it must have something to do with not knowing what is under me or something along those lines.

Not sure it's all that irrational....

How could that ever be considered to be a fun passtime?

I really, really hate teeth grating. That horrible sound/feeling when you grind your teeth on something (like a coat or t shirt or something). Really don't like it.
