Don't blame them.

I suspect their neighbours might think something's up though:

I don't know why anyone would not want to remain anonymous. If I won that sort of money I would not want to take an afternoon of from my car and house buying spree to have my photograph taken with a giant cheque and glass of bucks fizz proclaiming that nothing would change!

Finally someone with some sense gets a big win.

These folk who cave in to Camelot pressure to go public only ever live to regret it.

Including family, I can seriously count on two hands the amount of people who would know if I won anything like a large amount of money.

Spot on.

Once people knew you were loaded it would create all sorts of problems.

I'd choose to be anonymous if I won the lottery, though it must be very difficult to contain that sort of secret.

I think it would be pretty easy to conceal that sort of win, not from friends and family of course, but from neighbours and the general public. I suppose I have the anonymity of London, no one would be surprised if we moved house and in a new location no onw would know our background

This.

If I won that sort of loot I would very quietly go about upgrading aspects of my lifestyle in an inconspicuous manner. Sure I'd move house and enjoy some cars but you can do that without being constantly harassed.

Yes. But mainly to people you know.

I'd be tempted to tell no-one at all. Possibly not even the wife. hehe

And if I had £80odd million in the bank, I wouldn't be upgrading the Sierra from an LX to a Ghia, I'd be buying a bloody Harrier jumpjet to get to Tesco.

I don't play, so my comments are really void. However; If I did win a large sum, I certainly wouldn't go public. I would tell only the closest friends and family but even then the actual figure would be private and only known by my partner and I. I enter into the occasional conversations at work "what would you do with £x million?" and my answer is always the same - absolutely no idea! Short of paying off my small mortgage, buying a couple of cars and taking a break somewhere I don't have a clue!

It would be nigh-on impossible to keep it a secret in the long term. If I won I'd give some money to my family - pay off family mortgages/set them up in houses or whatever. Even if I never gave them money to spend themselves and 'controlled' what it was used for, even the closest family will tell someone at some point. But to add to this I'd want to help other extended family members who are in trouble, maybe a few local charities. Someone will suss something out (not helped by my new Maserati and extended vacations).

Knowing what my 'family' are like, I would definately keep quiet, I don't want people that won't even acknowledge me suddenly wanting to be friends, and then bhing for not getting anything out of me, neither would I want to be made to feel obliged to give them anything.

I would probably say I had a few numbers, but not the big one.

I do have a question though, if say someone with a real bad credit history, could only get a basic account, can't get a credit card etc, won an amount like this, or even a smaller amount say £1m, where on earth would they bank it? Would the bank suddenly ignore the credit rating and give them a current account with a cheque book/debit card etc? Or do the likes of Camelot help with sorting out a decent account for them?
