Xbox RROD, easy to fix?

I've got a 2006 Xbox 360 thats suffered rrod, is it worth getting fixed or buying a new one? I've looked on the net and it's seems a few people have repaired there own, is it an easy fix? thanks in advance.

RROD is a general Hardware error. It covers lots of Hardware errors.

If you have the 3 red lights then it is the typical GPU hardware issue. Many of the fix's only last a short time.

IMO I would pay MS the £82 to repair it, they will send you a different console with a new 12 month warranty.

Its a simple job to do. Generally its just overheating due to the heatsink not been held onto the CPU by the "X-Clamp" firmly enough.

Get a £5 kit off ebay which replaces the clamp with bolts and washers, takes maybe an hour to do first time being really careful. Mine lasted a year before dying again.

When yours failed did it always start up with the rrod? mines been running with and intercooler and it would work for 10 minutes but now wont even start up. I will have a look on ebay at the kit, it's got to be worth a go.

Yeah when mine went it was gone, RROD all the time.

The only thing that might be a pain is getting a T9(Think it's a 9) screwdriver head, I think some kits include one but my Dad had a set of Torx heads in his toolbox.

The X-Clamp mod is only worthwhile if you can reflow the GPU at the same time. The general GPU overheating cause of RROD is due to dry Joint under extreme heat. The damage is done, so unless you can reflow the GPU it is only a short term fix. Plus once you have opened the case you cannot send it back to MS.

Its worth a go if you are faily confident with stripping the unit down and removing the heat sinks. Get some decent thermal compound at the same time.

If not just take the simple option of sending it back to MS and get a working XBOX with 12 month warranty within two weeks.
I did both methods, one the first I got the GPU professionally reflowed. Unfortunately now one of the Capacitors has blown. The 2nd XBOX (with HDMI) was returned to MS and got a brand new XBOX in return.
