AA renewal quote in the post last week, £230.50 for roadside, home start, relay and stay mobile.

Quote online was £131 or something like that.

I really wish companies wouldn't use tactics like this. Sure, some people might just go with the renewal quote instead of looking online/checking the competition, so it's an easy way for them to rip people off, but it's also an easy way to lose many customers.

Are Green Flag any good?

Green flag = support BRAKE. Have a look at Britannia, They were good when I used them.

I'm currently too broke for breakdown cover right now so have not used them for a year or so.

I used the rac when I wrapped my car round a lamp post friday morning. OK so the cover was free but the service was very good, good enough for me to notice despite just having a fairly big accident and wrecking my P&J.

ADAC are the daddies imo. You'll get the AA in the UK, but you'll be covered europe wide smile

Use your tesco points for RAC cover it works out at 25% of the orginal costs, alternatively check what cover you get with your bank account

Many insurance companies offer breakdown cover free or very cheaply. Bear that in mind.

£15/mth with my bank gets me full international travel ins, mobile phone cover, home emergency cover, full rac cover and a few others.

used the rac 3-4times in 2 yrs, faultless service imo.

They do it because many lazy/unorganised/stupid people don't check their renewals. Easy money.

One phonecall, one statement that they match the real price immediately. That's all it takes.

I covered all three of my cars via Green Flag for about £100, (after receiving the same sort of bks as the OP from the AA at renewal time). Haven't had to use them (GF) yet though..............

Some of the packaged bank accounts include it, so you may have it already if you do one of those.

The cost is usually ~£150 per annum on a monthly subscription and includes breakdown cover and multi-trip travel insurance amongst other things, so ends up pretty efficient.

Read the T&Cs very, very carefully to familiarise yourself with exactly what is covered.

I've come across far to many people who 'presumed' their 'free' breakdown cover covered every eventuality only to find out the hard way that it doesn't when it's too late. Infact there has even been a couple of threads on here of late about the false economy of budget policies.

Called RAC out on a few occasions with our family cover and on every occasion its been nothing but excellent service, in most cases they've arrived in ~20 mins or less.

I've used the AA in the past and wouldn't recommend them, although I would say stay away if they work out cheaper but on service alone RAC gets my money each year.

+1

Is this not the obvious thing to do? I do it every year (and thought most people did) and they always match the online/new customer price which is usually 30%+ cheaper than the renewal price.
