No, but your ears aren't good enough to work out where low frequencies come from (better at mid-high).
For example, many satelite component hife speakers (such as Bose) recommend that the bass unit is the same distance away from the listener as the rest of the speakers (so the sound arrives at the same time) but don't insist it's in the same position as the other speakers.

Spot on Darren. I think anything below 90 hertz; you can't detect where the base is coming from. Bose have done this for years with their accoustimas systems, as Darren has said.
