I have a mondeo st220 that has a big ends knock (spun bearing) i have had no luck finding a replacement engine(tried the usual Ebay, breakers etc), does anyone know where there is one? or recommend a good engine builder in the North Wales area that could repair mine, my engine has only done 45,000
Thanks,
Scott

Have you tried www.breakeryard.com ? You can fill in what you want and they will send the request to breaker yards all over the country (costs you nothing to ask). Usually they will ship the item to you although with an engine I am not sure. I have used them a couple of times for doors and bumpers etc. and I have usual got what I want.

You might able to get away with droping the sump and replacing the bearings which wont require a total engine rebuild, but if your big end bearings have gone after 45000 miles then you have a serious problem with the engine, or there is hardly any oil in it!

thanks for the ideas,i have left my details with a few breakers search online sites, just waiting to see if any come back with a result. the sump on my car had a small leak which let the oil get low before it was noticed. could just replacing the bearings work?, the engine has no smoke and doesnt shake about( i was told you would get these symptoms if the rod or crank was damaged),I have tried to find a garage to split my engine and refit with reconditioned engine block but as soon as i mention V6,3.0L or ST they don't want to touch it.

I don't know the particulars of your engine and how easy it is to drop the sump, some engines it is quite easy, others it is a monumental PITA. If it is just the bearings that are worn then replacing just them might work, the problem with just doing that is you are assuming that the lack of oil hasn't damaged something else. You could replace them only to find something else goes wrong later.

Normally a replacement engine would be cheaper than rebuilding your existing one but if you can't find one you may have no other choice.

Other than to fit a 1.8 tongue out

It is vanishingly unlikely that if the bearings have worn out because of low oil level the crank won't also be needing a regrind and no you won't get smoke or engine shake just because the crank is also worn. Whoever told you that is best avoided as a source of engine expertise.

i understand the chances of the crank being ok are very slim, two second hand engines i have found the want almost 2k for them with approx same milage as mine has, i would like to find a garage that would split my engine and refit with recon engine block, if i could find one, i was also informed that a Jag s-type engine block (AJ30) is the same and should fit, and be easier to find, is this more wrong information im recieving?

Problem with fitting a recon block is - among other things - that you are assuming that your valve train hasn't been damaged by the lack of oil. Could end up being a false economy as you will have to then have the top end rebuilt.

Not sure if the Jag block fits I'm affraid.

I might be wrong but I thought these engines were throwaway and were not advisable to rebuild. I was ttold this by the mechanics for my old company cars.

I always wonder about engine swop places.............I would ask ford if an exchange engine is available. I know my mate does this on Vauxhalls, as he gets an exchange 2 ltr for not a lot, so when a cambelt goes, better to do that.
The only issue with just buying a half engine is the labour to rebuild dirty old parts and new gaskets and water pumps and ............. gets really expensive...........
