Seriously.... A lass at work, 20 years old so no NCB to speak of, crashed her car a few months ago. Her fault, claim made to repair the 3rd party car and her car, her renewal came through yesterday for her Mini Cooper at £45 less. I don't get it.

Still no NCB.
Had an accident = premium goes up
One year older = premium goes down.

Net difference in this case has been a £45 reduction. I bet it would have been more if she'd not crashed.

Disclaimer: Crashing your car might not lower YOUR insurance so if you try this and get charged
more, you cannot sue me, I'm only providing a little anecdote, not a "how to" guide.

Its because they use highly sophisticated software to interrogate and assess the risk based on a huge variety of weighted criteria, it is way too complex for any of our feeble minds to work out in a mere rational sense. Here is a screen shot where you can clearly glimpse the technology at work :

I thought insurers had an involuntary excess for under 21s, Going over 21 usually has a big impact on premiums

The drop that comes with another year outweighed the loading of the premium due to the accident. Simple.

Post hoc ergo propter hoc? Who's to say that her insurance wasn't going to go down by more than £45 until she had the crash?
