I'm emigrating with my family in June. Because of the massive cost of moving stuff by road in Europe there's a lot of stuff we don't want to take, such as sofars, a wardrobe, etc. - stuff like that. I've considered putting it all on ebay and taking my chances, but is there a cleverer way of doing it?

I'm thinking the equivalent of webuyanycar.com, but for furniture and appliances? Does such a thing exist? Or is there another way of doing this that I haven't thought of? I don't really care how little I get for it, I'm more interested in not having a lot of hassle.

Look in the Yellow Pages for house clearance or similar. You're probably after someone like these guys:

http://buckshouseclearance.com

You may not get an especially good price but they will do exactly what you say you want someone to do!

Stick a sign up on a Thursday outside your house saying 'Garage Sale - here - Saturday'.

Early Saturday, put everything you want to sell out on your drive/front garden.

Ensure you have plenty of family/friends round to help and watch over your stuff. Ensure your front door and garage door are locked.

You'll be surprised how much you can flog/the tat people will buy.

We did ebay - its a bit of a palaver, but folks taking your large stuff away is helpful - got some good prices for some items, but organising that stuff gets taken away when you need it to go is challenging

have you tried a card in the post office window;)

Do a competition where people text in their number and you just randomly pick a number out.

You can do it like The Gadget show and read out all the stuff in a really annoying long winded way.

Then just don't give away the furniture at the end?

The British Heart Foundation has shops which sell furniture and appliances now. Unless you really need the money, how about donating stuff to them? you could feel really good about yourself afterwards, too.

We emigrated 2 years ago. Albeit to Australia. I would advise you to stop and think about selling the big stuff.

Unless you are going into furnitished accomodation, you will still need the sofa etc when you get there. So ask yourself, can you buy it cheaper at the other end, than the cost of shipping it. Your in for alot of costs as it is, as everyone seems to have there hands held out for your money.

I've always found gumtree very good for shifting white goods and furniture. Make sure you post pictures though with each advert.
