Galaxy gearbox gone funny on me
Discussion
I have a fault on my '99 tdi manual Galaxy which I suspect may have happened to others and am looking for a little advice. The car had a new flywheel and clutch six months ago.
We were in sunny Cornwall and climbing up a steep hill when I heard a clunk, and thought the engine had dropped a valve or worse, but after a second the car recovered and continued. The next hill lead to more clunking which sounded suspiciously like the gearbox. Luckily we were only a few miles from our destination and I managed to creep home.
If you engage any gear the clutch will take up and you can pull away, but if you apply any throttle there is a crunching noise when a bit more torque goes to the wheels and you lose all drive. Depress the clutch and it disappears. It is still easy to select gears. These symptoms and google lead me to believe that it may be the drivers side driveshaft splines that had failed, I removed and replaced the shafts but the problem remains.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
