1.25 zetec Aux belt tensioner help

My Aux belt tensioner gave up the ghost last friday. Finaly managed to get down the scrappy today, got a replacement part, bolted it back together and the belt is loose... its just not right.
Its the air-con self adjusting spring loaded type tensioner, and it seems im not locating the 'hook' on the spring correctly into the block.
I cant see into the 'spring cup' to see where its supposed to sit, but ive had a good finger and there seems to be variable mounting angles, im trying to mount it in the position it was in on the car at the scrappy but when its tight, the plate twists and there's no spring resistance.
Please can someone tell me if there is a specific way to get this damn thing located correctly?
