I know it's one of the worst when it comes to what cars, but I'm thinking of getting a second car for fuel economy. The Subaru's a fantastic car but I'd like to be able to use something to get to work/gym/shops/gf etc without spending a million quid.

I've got a fairly limited buying budget as whatever car I buy is going to cost me upwards of £1000 to insure (I'm 19, car parked on street, no NCB as it's used on my STi, over 20,000 miles a year etc). So far I was thinking of either a 306 1.9 XRdT or an S reg Golf TDi. I'd prefer a turbodiesel over a standard diesel as most of my time is spent on the motorway and I'm happy to forego the extra insurance group for something that won't struggle on the motorway, especially as it's probably going to be pushing half my age at this price.

Any suggestions? I'd prefer a diesel due to my mileage and I'm really not fussed what car I get. I was looking at MX5's but an insurance quote of £4600 doesn't really bode well for me.

Have you phoned some insurance companies and asked if they will mirror your NCB?

Also is admirals multicar worth a shout?

That's a good idea - I shall ask about mirroring the NCB tomorrow. Afraid I'm still a rookie when it comes to this.

I did try Admiral for the Impreza only and they simply said "errr... you need some more driving experience for that car, I'm afraid." I'll give them another try in the morning but I don't think things will change... plus if they do I'll have to wait until November to get my next year's NCB and I'd rather not lose what I've built so far, especially in this thing! smile

£1000 economy wont come any better than a Pug 106 / Citroen Saxo 1.5d and they will sit at 70 all day, as the tin can around the engine weighs very little.

Find one with a Bosch fuel pump and it will run on part veg oil, which taking into account an offer in my local tesco, was working about about 47p/litre.

I've been told to avoid Saxos and 106s as the insurance is sky high due to kids my age writing them off. Shame, as they sound appealing.

Any other suggestions chaps?

A rover derv can be bought for quite cheap and are probably cheap to insure... Rover 25 Derv or Rover 45 Derv. Plenty of pulling power and torque for the motorway.

If you dont mind me asking, aren't you paying out of your arse being 19 with an STI??? Most insurance companies wont even touch me on a 1.8T Golf and i'm 20!!! with 2yrs NCB!

Any small diesel or maybe small petrol will be the answer.

I had a 1998 Pug 106 with the 1.5 straight diesel in. Driven correctly it'd average62-66mpg and on Shell V-Power diesel I reckon it was nearer 70mpg. But you did have to drive it right, drive it a little harder and it'd drop from 62mpg down to 45-48mpg. I did over 60,000 miles in it in a couple of years and not once did I ever see 50 anything mpg.

Slightly bigger saloon diesels (Pugs, Rover 400, etc.) should see 45mpg and most 1.0 litre petrol hatches will do around 38-40mpg.

My work hack is a 1.0 Yaris on a 52 plate.

I've had it 5 years, and it's averaged 61mpg over that time. Nothings ever gone wrong, and a service costs no more than £150. Group 3 ins too I think.

Incredible but true. smile

My commute is approx 25 miles each way. Two possible routes, M3 J4 to M25 J14, or back roads to M25 J11 then M25 J14. So either a busy motorway or a mixture of A and B back roads.

It's chip as chips motoring.

insurance on a 1.5d 106 is most definately not that high!

Ford KA. Might 'only be' 45mpg but at least you'll have fun throwing it about, and won't be running on the fuel of Satan.

Rover Diesel is a good shout, I've been running my 600 for almost 2 years and it gets 45-55mpg all the time.

They are cheap to buy, reliable, comfortable, easy & cheap to maintain and can be run on vegetable oil if you so wish.

yes This.

My run is 25% stop/start in town then 75% 60/70mph and I get 55mpg across a tank. Even thraping the crap out of it across France it refused to go lower than 39mpg.
