How does it work? I am just wondering as i was watching a old bond film and the baddie's main thing was diamond smuggling? How was money made on this, was it avoiding tax? And then with the blood diamond thingy, Is the market that controlled that you have to have special licences or something? Just wondering!

Which bond film is this?

The one that was filmed in Iceland was using the "diamond mine" to launder dirty african conflict diamonds and sell them on as clean "legit" diamonds...

I would imagine that a lot of the dirty diamonds in places like North Korea (die another day), can not easily be moved by the natives, so they use middle men to "clean" the diamonds and turn them into real money.. obviously they keep a cut of the proceeds...

If you have a big pile of diamonds in your country that you cant spend... it seems logical to use them to pay for weapons.... you get weapons and you get rid of the diamonds.... hence why they are called "conflict diamonds" Sierra Leone and the countries around use(d) diamonds as bartering chips for weapons to further the violence and enlarge the mining... horrible circle..

I guess its just like laundering anything.... Soak, Rinse, Spin, Dry...

Yes think its diamonds are forever, and debeers are down the road from me! But how does the smuggler make their money? Lets say you've a boot full of diamonds and your pulled at customs, whats the story? Drugs are illegal, fags you've the tax laws, but whats the issue with the diamonds? I kinda understand the conflit diamond thing, they are cheaper i expect and therefore the margins are much greater for the dealers.

If I buy 5Kg of diamonds in some african country for £200... pay some student £100 to carry them into the USA.... Once they are here I can get them cut in my garage... (provided I am not busy trying to take over the world with some daft ploy that will never work!)

I could then potentially sell that 5Kg of diamonds for around £3500..... so I make a nice tidy proffit... little risk to me given I have paid someone else to carry them... and will pay someone else to distribute them for me...

Look for documentaries about the Kimberly process, it should give you an idea about conflict diamonds.

I thought it was mostly a fairly efficient way of moving wealth around in the days when moving cash around was illegal due to exchange controls?

Sounds cool though doesn't it? So much more class that drug smuggling.

I will pay you £4000 for 5kg of good quality, already cut diamonds.

I will even throw in a Corgi Aston Martin in pristine condition.

Is a diamond like a car and pretty much worthless without the V5? If not how can you tell a conflict diamond from any other diamond?

You can't to be honest. The diamonds that are subject to the kimberly process are exported as a package. The certificate that they are conflict free covers the package and not the individual diamonds themselves. Once the package is opened and the diamonds are distributed they no longer have any form of identification. This is why Liberia had mass exports of rough diamonds during the conflict in Sierra Leonne even though Liberia is known for not having such a natural resource in abundance.

Debeers brought in the kimberley process to make it look like they could trace conflict diamonds, but they can't really. So the next best thing is to pay a premium for a certified diamond instead:

Here's a good thread i posted a couple of months ago:

Is there anything on an atomic level that can identify rough origin?

So they just smuggle them to hide cash. Like money laundering? But what happens if their caught, other than james bond hunting you down.

If you're trying to smuggle illegal diamonds into the country I'm sure you face a jail sentence.
