Driving to France

Hi Guys/Gals,
Driving to France tomorrow, have all my continental driving gear (bulbs, hi viz bibs etc).
I should be driving about 800 miles or so over the course of a week, the weather is going to be slighly warmer than here in the uk too. What things on the car should I check?
- Engine coolant/water level?
I was thinking of topping this up, is okay to top up directly with 50% water 50% engine coolant? Im just thinking that I have put topped up only with water in the past, and the mix is probably a bit low on the coolant stuff. plus how high should it be in the resevoir
- Oil?
My oil always seems to be near the max end of the dip stick. I read it a minute after turning the engine off from operating temp, do I need to screw the dipstick in or is it simply okay just to dip in?
With regards to oil I have hardly added any since having the car! But the level has always been within the parameters, is that normal or am I just lucky.
Also, I was thinking about oil temp, oil pressure, water temp...what are acceptable limits and what should i watch ou for in hotter countries?
Any other suggestions welcomed...

I would also take 100A fuse and spanners to fit, together with a spare throttle cable. There is no point taking items which a local garage would require specialist tools to fit. Take one of Graham's fantastic workshop manuals if you can. Remember driving licence, reg and insurance docs and breakdown cover.
You can adjust the headlight beam from behind by rotating the whole reflector assemblies anticlockwise.
You will have a great time on those fantastic French roads and will attract a lot of (positive) attention. We were folowed for miles by a string of gendarmes and when we stopped for fuel all they wanted was to chat!
