I posted a couple of pics on the Ekranoplan thread of the area around where I work, I took quite a few pics this afternoon and at the request of Silent1 I have posted a few below so you can have a gander.

The photos are of the old infrastructure that surround the Russian powerplant I am working at. The plant recently converted from turf/peat burning to gas, so all the railways, wagons and conveyors that supplied it have basically been abandoned.

I included a couple of trucks which I think look pretty cool and are an example of the Russians still using old technology and designs due to their ruggedness and reliability.

Apologies for the quality of the pictures, I ain't that great with a camera!

love them, thanks. I remember my trip to Ukraine in 1996, and all the trucks were painted that light blue colour. is there a reason for it?

Excellent photos, they rather put me in mind of a level in "Modern Warfare"...

I particularly like the warning sign about the train tracks, talk about stating the obvious!

Yes, they used to be dark blue.

Did the thought also cross your mind that you would have been shot as a spy if you did that 20 years ago? wink

Nice photos.

I don't think I've seen one of those ZIL's in a colour other than light blue! I think that was the colour they all left the factory in.

They even have a little gat you have to go through to cross the tracks, even though you can just walk around it.

However you MUST use the gate!

Got to love Russian beauracracy.

Nice photos.
Definitely. I would love to have seen this place in say 1980 and see how it all looked and worked. There is so much really cool cold war stuff here. I am forever wandering about taking photos.

If it was still the Soviet Union, I would have been in a gulag long ago.

Looks amazing mate, you'll have to get inside some of it and take some photos.
It would take a lot to keep me out of that conveyor bridge and the building the tracks go into!

Fantastic pictures.

Do they use a larger rail gauge in Russia then? Or is it my eyes deceiving me?

I think they shoot greenies here.

Those trucks I posted pictures of are V8 petrol powered. They sound really ace.

It is slightly larger. 4'11 5/6" against our 4'8 1/2".

One of the reasons the Soviets went for a slightly larger gauge (so I'm told) is to make a rail based invasion of the Soviet Union harder.

No idea jow true it is mind.

Ah thanks for that, I thought my eyes were going squiffy!

I'm used to referring to our gauge as 1435mm from the survey work I used to do.

I can imagine zee Germans would have had a logistical nightmare!

The Russian gauge is 1520mm in new money.

The Russkies are happy to do anything to annoy the Germans, they still have a healthy dislike for them!
