I've a friend who's son is 17. anyway same old story and just passed his test. Wants to keep it all legit and above board so no piggy backing.

He's been quoted 4700 on a 1.1 fiesta, now i know insurance is expensive but 4700 when the car he wants is 500 quid seems a lot.

Can anyone recommend any companies for younger drivers? I asked could he go down the classic route but i think the minimum age is somthing like 21+

Any ideas or tips or in fact companies he could approach.

Thanks in advance chaps.

I had a classic policy when I was under 21, but that was a few years ago now.

Right. Insurance is going to be expensive.

Some tips.

1. Don't buy the obvious kids chavbox, Corsa, Saxo, Fiesta. They get crashed. A lot. By kids. Buy a Volvo, or a Land Rover, or a Hillman Imp, or a Skoda diesel. Grandad car = grandad premiums

2. Take Passplus

3. DO NOT FRONT. EVER.

When I had just passed my test, Endsleigh always came out pretty cheap. Definatly worth doing a confused.com as well, if you haven't already.

Sorry, but dont speak if you have no idea what your on about. BMWs, landys(unless you have farm insurance) etc are not cheaper to insure than hatch backs for a new driver.

Get some thing small; fiesta, corsa etc with a small engine and low insurance group. Even a 1.4 will bunk up the insurance price a fair amount.

I'm 20 and these are the 3 I've been with all fully comp and prices. Direct line: 1.0 corsa £1250, churchil focus 1.6 £880 then £600. Tesco focus 1.6 £430, but then went up to £600 when i got my 318i.

The cheapest I've found, for every car i've looked at, has been admiral.

Whats the postcode? very high risk area or low risk area?

Probably try a policy with low miles (or maybe one of those IKUBE insurance thingy) where you cant be driving during 11pm-5am.

Its quite confusing how insurance works... for my 1.1 Saxo was actually reasonable (passed when 18) but i had 1 years NDNC earned because I insured the car under my brother so he could drive it before i passed my test and take me out for a few lessons in it...

Try your unsuspecting motors, Suzuki's are really good for cheap insurance. Try maybe a Rover 211? there 1.1 8v i think... there quite cheap for insurance as well, a lot of young rover enthusiasts start off with that over at mg rover forum...

Its a nice area but unfortunately falls in a dodgy postcode catchment area, no way out unfortunately.

Thanks again chaps.

Tell him to wait until he's 18 - there's a significant drop in premium, even if he hasn't been driving since passing his test.

I owned a 1.2 Punto when I was 18 and 1.2 Fiesta between 18 and now (currrently 21) I have regularly checked the left field choices as I have wanted to do this as cheaply as possible regardless of the car, never have I found them to be cheaper then what I already have though. I was only checking again this morning to find everything else is ateast £100 more. I suspect I'm doing it wrong lol.

Sorry to highjack and go OT but a quick question; I got 2 quotes this morning for a UK MX5 and a japanese import Eunos, both cars were very similar ages and values. UK quote was £700, import £1600. This normal?

Edited by akaRob on Wednesday 19th May 16:14
Imports are usually more on insurance as there "not built for uk roads" therefore higher risk...

biglaugh

Big cars like that, which normally have big engines, are going to be VERY expensive for a 17 year old.

I paid £3600 to insure my Ford Ka, when I was 17, with 0 NCB, on my own policy. Granted, the car was worth a lot as it was brand new at the time, which hiked up the premium, and I went for fully comprehensive rather than third party. And my post code area is considered slightly higher risk than normal I think.

This website is very useful:

Just been through this pain for my 18y son

Cheapest I found was Quinn (think based in NI?) £1750 fully comp on a 2001 Skoda fabia 1.4 16v

I found that generally fully comp quotes were cheaper than 3rd party for some reason, looked at piggy backing etc but really not worth it in the end as you will want them to build up their no claims. Other posters are right the normal fiesta, saxo etc seem to be very expensive to ensure in comparison to something slightly left field.

By the way can't speak highly enough of the little Fabia, been hooning around in it myself and have become quite attached!!

Series II or III Land Rover and check out insurance with the NFU.

Classic policies have restrictions, but you can still get insurance on an older, so might be worth checking out how much a classic car would cost. Maybe something like a Herald, Morris Minor, Austin 1100 sort of thing.

As has been suggested, look at Grandad cars.

When I was 18, after gaining my first years NCB, I had 3 options for cars open to me and got multiple quotes (3rd party F&T) for each. The cheapest were:

1/ My (then) current Fiesta 1.1 - £970

2/ A newer 2.0 16v Cavalier - £940

3/ A Saab 9000 2.3 Turbo - £440

I guess kids don't crash Saabs!

Think Quinn may be cheap for a reason - IIRC they are the insurance equivalent or Ryan air......

I can see the logic of looking at left-field cars but personally i've never found it to be true, it's always seemed Volv,Saab etc = Bigger engine therefore more expensive, shame really.
