Guys

Been trying to find this on the interweb, and would have thought it's a fairly easy question to find the answer to, but it seems not...

I've had a 4.0 '95 Cherokee before, and this time was going to get a '98 Jeep Cherokee TD, but after some concerns of the reliability of the VM engine, am looking at some alternatives.

The one that stands out is the '99ish Grand Vitara, has a low box, is the right size for me and has 5 doors, and the 2.5 V6 seems reasonable for fuel, and not too slow.

But, what suspension setup is on the Grand Vitara, does it have IFS on the front? is it springs all round? and will it be able to do the same offroading a cherokee XJ could do?

IIRC independent on the fro t, coil sprung beam on the back. Off road ability primarily limited by lack of articulation and comparitively low ground clearance. Vauge memory that there's some bizarre arrangement by which four wheel drive is engaged by pneumatic pressure to the front diff which engages the front prop. Don't take my word for that though!

No its all mechanical on the Vitara's up to 05. Good cars, tough and good off-road. Have a look what is the standard mode of transport in the Caribbean, then look at the lack of tarmac plus rainy season. V6 has slippy diff as well. Handle well on tarmac in 2 wheel mode. Don't go for the diesel though.
I have a MK1 Vitara here and had for 7 years , Grand Vitara sold last year and many in the Carib. Also just sold a new Wrangler Sahara and running a V8 Disco. Regularly use a Wrangler TJ and many others. Get a late 05 Grand Vitara X-EC you won't look back. Good fun on the road ( Its quite a small car RWD and 155hp and discs all - round, slippy diff, 235/60 tyres, strut brace and quite hard suspension, so not that much body roll for a 4x4, and good steering feedback) and quicker than you would think, very capable off road.(Higher HP rating on the last V6 ).
