Guys,

Been on vaccation down in France and Italy and am thinking of taking the car train from France up to Germany to save quite a few miles. What I am thinking though is that the F430 might be too low? Is it better just to drive and not risk not getting on the train?
Thanks!

Drive the damn thing and pick a Sunday where the lorries are off the autobahn and go for it. Much better than the train.

I think I've become a typical Ferrari owner. I read that and thought "WHAT ABOUT THE MILEAGE?".

Unless you've lowered it then ride height is not an issue. I was thinking of getting that train this summer too. Wanted to get the Paris one which goes to French riviera but they wont allow Ferrari's on (despite ftting in all their dimensions! mad )

Drive it. Drive it. Drive it biggrin

driving

For what it's worth - there have been threads about ferraris on the train before with regards to stone chips etc. I think the general trend was that you should be ok but worth a search!

In the Undemocratic Republic of YazzLand, it would be a crime to put a Ferrari on a train. Drive the thing - that is what it was built for (and I presume why you bought it).

F430s sit as high as range rovers in comparison to other early ferraris. There not that low at all and i never have to think about speed bumps when driving one. Were as the 355s rolleyes

There were a couple of threads about this a while back. I looked into it in some detail and I recall the trains are very basic, loading a bit shoddy, and on the whole an unpleasant experience. I passed. It's MUCH more fun to drive it there.

Hum, chance to drive over the Alps from Italy in a Ferrari on the way to derestricted autobahns or watching some muppet ratchet strap your Ferrari out in the open on a rusty train.... tough choice there....

I've done this a few times, and I think you're getting lost in the glamour of the idea of the drive. In reality the 8hr motorway trip down to get to the fun Alps bit is woefully boring. By getting the train you actually get more time driving it on the roads you want to. So, paradoxically, by taking the train you are driving the car more!

I do the across Europe thing every year covering various routes like "Napoleon", "stelvio", "Alps" and the "Dolomites" ect. I have never used the motorway on the way down...ever. The driving route is what you make it.
For example you would miss out on some great locations in the north of france and Germany. Like the Le Circuit de Gueux, which has some fantastic driving roads. At this historic location they used to race cars through the streets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts50AXdWTcY
Also worth a visit while driving down is the new Porsche museum in Strutguard, fantastic place and on the way to the Dolomites (German/swiss/Italian alps http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolomites ).
There are many other great driving locations and venues in the north of Europe, i could easly go on.
I recommend if you are going to do a driving across Europe holiday, do it properly.

This was our logic in planning a trip to the Alps next month; train from Dusseldorf to Innsbruck overnight and back again 4 days later gives plenty of time where we want to be and given a limited amount of time away, we need to miss out hours of dull m-ways and simply get there. Fingers crossed the train is not a 'mare.

All of those are the destination roads! Not the enroute roads. I guess it depends on how much time you have, we usually only have 4-5 days, so I'd rather spend 4-5days in southern europe and in alps, rather than spending 2 enroute. If you have more time at your disposal then a more leisurely jaunt to the south on country-ish roads would be nice.
