Okay, so I'm looking for a car that I can use purely as a toy. I have £10000 to spend, fuel economy is not an issue as it won't see big mileage, but it must be a bit different and be fun to drive.

I was thinking of maybe an early Jaguar XKR or a BMW 840Ci as I like big coupes. Is a Maserati Ghibli a viable used buy?

How about an MK Indy if it's purely a toy?

I fear I would kill myself in a vehicle like this, plus I wear a syrup and so would prefer a fixed head vehicle.

Jag and BMW too mainstream for a fun car for my tastes (obviously yours differ wink). I'd be after a lightweight sports car - Caterham/Westfield/Lotus or perhaps a Porsche of some sort. The Maser idea is OK but I'd be wary of maintenance costs on any big originally-expensive car.

Old American V8, the bigger the better. Basic engineering, lovely noise, different. Just petrol...

If you want a toy, look to a soft top.

MPG not an issue: you'll be wanting a big engine, sir.

The big trick is to choose something that won't cost you another few thousand quid in the next 1-2 years.

Were it me, I'd look at an old Porker, M3 convertible, an Elise, a TVR or an S4 convertible. Some of those will bust your budget, admittedly. But there's fun to be had.

Surely a Joke. Why not spend the money on some new hair instead.

Not with any certainty of getting the pronunciation correct.

I did the sweepover thing for some time but working for the Coast Guard meant that I found myself frequently in windy clifftop locales and could only face one way, which was never the most convenient situation. Since then, I have invested in a few rugs.

Perhaps a Number One haircut is the way forward after all.

Oh, that's not the end of the world, I've met quite a few Chimaera owners who don't pronounce it "properly".

The importance is the severe grin you'll be stuck with, so you look like an even more mad Joker. Just ask Garlic.

A big coupe is hardly a toy
potential big bills
quite slow acceleration
old clunker
will lose a lot of money
expensive road tax
bad on fuel
expensive servicing
Idiot.

Won't depreciate
Pre 2001 road tax fixed @ £190/205
Sericing @ specialists quite reasonable
Rapid acceleration

How about spending 10 grand on a really nice hat? You might even get a crown for that money, that would be nice!
