was in a farm shop today and saw some cans of bitter shandy going cheap, now as a child of the 70's ,I had to have one.

It wasn't the brand I lusted after as as child, who can remember the delights of shandy and lager & lime top decks that made me feel so grown up as a nipper.

I think the namby pamby state must have banned them!!

I remember top deck shandy i think it got killed off as it was blatantly marketed at kids. Im not a child of the seventies though, I was born in the 80's, I guess it vanished around the early 90's.

alcopops have been walloped under the new licensing laws too, at my work Im not even allowed to put soft drinks which could be used as mixers near the booze aisle! Tonic water etc is okay but red bull or coke is a big no no. In 10 years drink will be sold over a counter only and in 20 years it'll probably be banned.

When I had off licenses kids would try to buy cheap cider as opposed to alcopops. More bang per buck.

lager and lime and shandy bass were the beginnings of my fascination with drinking beer.

LOL, yes I can recall knocking back Top Deck down the park with my mates sitting astride my Raleigh Grifter when I was 9 or 10. We must have looked completely ridiculous laugh

IIRC it was about 0.2%ABV so clearly presents a moral hazard...rolleyes I remember it tasting foul, but I was a weird child and thought most soft drinks were too sweet as well.

Red Bull = caffeine. And a stupid amount thereof; I've seen it 'energy drinks' wreck lives but in a more subtle way to alcohol.

Coke = caffeine and phosphoric acid, as used by dentists to etch tooth enamel.

Yes, there was a story a few years ago of a kid being refused the sale of a can on Shandy Bass from a shop whilst in his school uniform !

Hmmm. I seem to remember it being 0.5% ABV and getting quite pissed on it - at the age of 6. Hey ho. smile

you sure? my local chavsda has moved all the energy drinks from the soft drink aisle to where the mixers are - wines & spirits aisle.

as a kid, I always found it stupid I could be served shandy in a pub but they wouldn't sell me non alcoholic beer.
