ARRGGHHHHH

Took the growler for a proper run today now its clean and whilst overtaking

went from third to OH HECK and then slid into fifth

At low revs it goes in but under accelaration or higher revs throws it back out !!

I imagine it is just the fourth gear cog but guess i am looking at engine out etc !!

Not what i hoped for after three weeks !!

Also need to go to le mans in three weeks so need a reasonably quick fix and wonder what you all think

Also may have to cancel the rolling road next tuesday :-(

Gonna be busy this weekend

Chill out! It might be the remote linkage bushes.

Try pulling the gearstick up vertically - if it moves by more than 1/2" it's the bushes.

You can replace them from under the car.

As Adam mentioned, it can be something else. Didn't have the issue you have got but:
- Had some strange stuff happing with the gearbox and strange noises (on the wedge) and the remote linkage bushes were the culprit.
- Had a gearbox that went during driving (not a TVR but a Rover SD1), no gear was available except 4th as this is a prise direct. Was able to drive home (up to 10 km of distance) and the box sounded like many wrenches in a wasching machine! One of the bearings on the layshaft was completey solid and for 50% gone yikes and the box was a write-off.
Is the box noisy with the engine running and the clutch engaged? If not noisy it is probably ok.....

Based on the above and 4th giving you a problem it could be just the remote linkage. Can still be a bugger to replace the bushes, but not as bad as gearbox removal etc.

Hmmmm
Thanks guys

I will play with it tomorrow as white wine has dulled the pain this evening !!

No Noise at all otherwise and no rpblems before or after and in low revs goes in and drives fine

Keeping my fingers crossed

Not Looking Good !!

Gearstick dosent move at all up or down so guess i have a cog problem rather than the bushes

It still works through the other gears so unless i can find someone to sort quickly will be struggling to get it done for le mans but will be driving down with out fourth gear !!!

This may be interesting !!

On the other side had help cleaning yesterday ( i was the assistant !) from DB800

The wagon looks fantastic

Amazing Job

Thanks

Well try changing the oil - Castrol SMX-S is my favourite. Sometimes these boxes "lock up" but then free themselves again, just keep using it and you might find it comes back on its own.

As long as the other gears aren't noisy and there isn't a _massive_ amount of filings coming out when you change the oil (you will get some though) you should be OK for now. At least 4th is a gear you can live without.

Thanks Adam

Have been out and bought the oil !

Just got to fins out where everything is as never changed the oil before in a gearbox !!

I assume there will be a drain plug and then a feeder in through the top ?

I asssume its all done from under the car ?

Thanks for the continued advice and am trying it all !!

Drain from plug on bottom of gearbox, if heavily swarfed then there is a problem, a little bit of fine swarf is acceptable. There will be a filling plug on the side of the gearbox, fill gearbox from this plug till it starts to run back out of the hole, put bung in a few turns then in neutral spin the propshaft and then recheck level. 17 year old son works at 3D Transmissions in Reading and this is normal procedure. Hope this helps

If you have 2m of plastic pipe then you can fill up sitting at the side of the car rather than underneath it, far more civilised. Bung in the first litre then check every so often during the second. Good idea with the spinning thing - makes sure the pump is emptied of air.

The filler plug (driver's side, half way up) is a 1/2" square as I recall so you'll probably need a spanner rather than a socket.

Hi All

I have had the gearbox oil changed which had small amounts of metal flakes which were pretty much stuck to the drain plug which seemed to be magnetised !!!

Not much at all considering 80,000 miles and whilst under 1500 revs it now goes into and stays in fourth gear even when driven up through the revs !

However still wont go in at anything over 1500 revs and screams and pops back out !

I was hoping for an oil change miracle but it seems not to be :-(

Thanks for all your advice and we will see where we get next after le mans !

So if you see a 450se with stripes and mr men decals chugging along in 5th give us a wave
