Ecu won't connect

So I have the software, managed to get a computer to test with but I get the message "cannot find configuration file for ecu Id ####### the ecu Id is made up of strange characters. I'm wondering if it is because it had a decat EPROM power chip upgrade in the past that the software can't talk to it
I've seen a cpl of posts on here about different ecu models and changing file names in the diagnostic folder but my ecu Id on screen doesn't even make sense.
Anyone else suffered this?
I'm now waiting on a software loaded laptop arriving from a very kind fellow tvr owner before I can progress

I had this recently when connecting to a Tamora. Although I was using the software for the speed six it didn't have the file for that ECU type. I downloaded the latest software form Graham Varley's site and was then able to connect.

If you download the new version of the software from my site here http://www.tvr-cerbera.co.uk/software.html it should work fine.

Hi Peter, I've used your software for years but its was that version that gave me trouble with the Tamora
and maybe why it won't connect to the OP's Cerb....if its a late speed 6??If you look through files download from your site for the different types of ECU's they come in groups. A .ECF file followed by A,B,C,D.RTV files. Your copy does not have 9410116A.RTV Unfortunately this was the file I required for the Tamora.
So I used Graham's copy which is complete with the 9410116A.RTV file.

I don't manage to connect to my ECU (Cerbera 4.5L), despite hours of time spent with computer parameters...
I bought to SHeng a cable serial to 3 pin, and a USB to serial adapter. I connected everything together, set the usb serial to come as port 1, tried with ignition on, and immobilizer off. I also tried with engine on.
As it didn't work, I looked for a laptop with a serial output, it didn't work better. I tried both softwares (old and new).
Does anybody have an idea about what could be wrong?

As I said, I also tried with a laptop with serial output, so I don't use the usb-serial adapter. It gives the same result.
The error message is "comms error".
The softwares find the COM, because if I change COM's name on the laptop, then the software says "can't find serial port". Once the COM is correctly set, this message disappears and I get the message "comms error".
I think I'll check the cables, from the inside of the ECU till the serial output. But any other idea is welcome!

I finally managed to connect a laptop to my ECU!
The problem came from the wiring I just bought. Rx was on Tx, Tx was on ground, and ground was on Rx.
Quite difficult to find the good information on wiring, I finally used info I found on the Sagaris forum.
At the end, I can connect to see where my engine problems come from : the poor engine running comes from a lambda sensor not working, and adaptative map has very bad values (-35%). Engine works perfectly as soon as I reset the adaptative maps.
I'm going to change the lambdas, anyway I think I have an other engine problem (engine cutoff, happened 3 times). I'll try to make the problem appear again with a laptop connected, hopefully I'll see if a sensor sends a bad signal.

I could have lambda swapped, I'll check that. Could you tell me which side is lambda 1 and lambda 2 (on diag software), and which side are cylinders 1357 and 2468?
Right now I'm trying to remove both lambdas and I'll clean them with a "burning thing" (don't know the english word..)
I'll check if they're on the right side when I start engine again.
