1992 E46 330Ci automatic c. 130k FSH.
A few minutes after starting the other morning I pulled up at a junction as usual and the darn thing just died. All the warning lights lit on the dash (like when you first switch on the ignition) but otherwise dead. Switched off and tried to restart. All the lights as usual but nothing else. Not a peep. Tried several times more with no joy. I sat there for a moment or two with hazards on deciding whether to push it to the kerb or just abandon it. One more try and it fired up sweet as a nut. Ran fine for a few days but then, again just a few minutes after a start it had a definite 'moment' when I thought it may happen again - stopped at a junction and it 'paused' or stuttered momentarily, though it didn't actually stop. Been fine since.
It's booked in for next week but anyone here have any ideas?

Sounds like symptoms of Cam Position sensors failing.
Gets worse so get them changed sooner rather than later.

A simple diagnostics test should show up what's at fault.

If it does turn out to be sensors, make sure you get BMW sensors and not after market sensors.

Mine started doing the same thing last year, get the codes read and that will tell you. I did both sensors on mine, they are quite easy to change DIY. Cost is about £60 per sensor from a dealer
