My 2.0T 05MY v70 in for service, running at about 27mpg, cost a bit to run now so thinking about going over to dark side. Given current s80 D5 SE as courtesy car......

First impressions -
very wallowy, although i will try sport setting on suspension
Only 32mpg dealer->office vs 28mpg office->dealer in my car
Bluetooth very good
No ipod connection in such a new car?
Ventilated seats very good
Plastic steering wheel, not leather?
Engine pulls very well, but unbelievably noisy, especially at idle...

Head says diesel next time, but heart wonders if I could live with the noise for such minimal savings... I like driving with sunroof open, nicer than aircon.... Car has done 40k miles so hardly worked hard.... Is the new 205bhp D5 any better?

ETA just seen the v70 handbrake thread and I think s80 has the same one and it isn't very good imo.

should have an ipod connection - 3.5 mm jack plug in centre storage box or Volvo do a "proper" kit for about £300.

Yes, it had an aux port, but on a car like that, I expected a proper USB with dashboard controls. More concern was the rough engine though - I'm guessing the new 205bhp version is a bit more refined and economical?

This is really odd. I was given a V50 2.0D loaner (which I moaned about as I wanted to try out a C30 T5 ideally!) and I was very impressed by how un-diesel like it was.

It was way better than the 1.9TDI and 2.0TDI engines from VW. I thought my next diesel would be a D5 but this review doesn't give it a good opinion.

I've had a 1.6d v50 as courtesy car and that was surprisingly good, but then again I expected nothing of it. I guess I had higher hopes of the s80 in terms of refinement, perhaps unrealistic ones.

I too find the VW TDI's a bit... "thrummy" for want of a better description. But they pull very well indeed.

I have the V50 2.0D on a powershift and find that and the old D5 on a Geatronic very similar, the 5 pot is perhaps a little more audible but nothing significant tbh. But then I don't have a sunroof so can't comment about that.

Long time since I drove an S80 but wasn't particularly memorable, though I do remember one fairly sideways moment in the snow when it seemed fairly controllable. Nowhere near as good as an S60 though.

Overall, even given it was a mere 1.6 I would say the v50 was the better all round car than the s80. If I didn't still need the space, I would have a v50 like a shot. I will try and test drive the 205bhp D5 v70, which on paper is my ideal car, well, from Volvo anyway. I thought Audi A6 too dull to look at (though the MMI sat nav and AMI is awesome), the Merc too dear and the dealer a miserable plank. Same goes for BMW I'm afraid.

Yep V50 is small and interior storage space packaging is lousy even for an estate. Fortunately I get away with it, but holiday times it's a squeeze.

Saw what looked like the new S60 briefly in the flesh today for the first time, it was going the other way and I was getting a wiggle on so only a glance.

Holy fricking maloley!

I am not posting a link to a photo as they do NOT do it justice.

s60 does look good in pictures, so if the flesh is better..... I hope they change the v70 interior to match the s60s as that would be an awesome combo
