The wife blew the zetec engine up at goodwood last weekend. Well it probably wasnt her fault, she just happened to be driving at the time.
Anyway on trying to get a quick cheap replacement I ended up with a '99 ST170, which I understand is an uprated Zetec & should be a sraight forward fit.

a)But the exhaust manifold looks like it should be a turbo. Is this standard for the early Focus?

b) The starter is on the wrong side of the engine for the bell housing. Do I just cut the ally away so it can fit on the correct side?

c) The sump is already low level, (does not stick down below the bell housing). But does it need baffles for anti surge as its now in line?

Iv searched for info on the above but all I can find is it should be easy engine to fit, and a 5v switched supply is required for the VVC.

Perhaps Iv just got a really early one & they are different now.

Thanks for help & I'll keep posted about my findings.

I have found out that I have what seems to be called a blacktop zetec. I thought they had plastic rocker covers & this is ally?

All the pictures on the web for this age engine, have the exhaust manifold that looks like it feeds a turbo in them. So it must be standard.

I have marked up the lower ally engine block for the starter aperture. I will get a grinder on it tomorrow. The top fixings are as T9 bellhousing.

its pretty straightforward as i've just swapped from a silver top to a black top and the st170 is a black top..
you need to sort rotation of the water pump, modify baffle plate from silver top to fit black top, swap clutch and flywheel over and thats about it from memory!

Had to fit the low line sump in the end. I was mislead as the original sump looked in line with the bell housing. But the focus gearbox must be pretty big. Luckily the sumps have the same matting face.

The water pump is bolted onto the face of the engine & driven by the fan belt. I assume it must run the correct way. My old zetec ran the water pump backwards for all its life. This was never a problem & I never had any heating issues, so Im not worried anyway.

I didnt change the flywheel - looks similar to the original (not dual mass) I did swap the clutch which is slightly larger.

After filling with oil & water, I span the engine over (without plugs), then fitted some new ones. It started within half a turn. Im amazed.

I have to get a larger fan belt (the alternator is not driven at the moment). Gear lever to fit, (the engine is 1.5" further back with the same pick up points.

Also the solenoid to connect up for the VVT. I need to step down from 12 to 5 volt's & connect to the ECU.
