Oh dear.

In my line of work lots of talk about watch companies goes on, as they're profilic print advertisers!

So a second ago a colleague was talking about Omega and why don't they advertise with us, and then another colleague said don't even bother trying to get them (our mag hasn't got the right demographic for the brand, as they're pricey watches), however another colleague chips in and says that they're similar price and qaulity to Citizen, and we get them advertising on occasion, last time I checked citizen were a lot cheaper than the average Omega watch.

And then another one chipped in with "if you're going to spend a lot of money on a watch its not going to be an Omega" "it would be a Cartier or a Rolex or something" rolleyes I quietly sat there with my 45mm Plant Ocean on without saying a word, then a colleague clocked I was wearing a large silver watch, asked what it was, and how much it was to buy, I said a couple of k and handed it to him to have a look. He was shocked at the weight and retracted his statement to a degree.

Its a sad state of affairs though isn't it, that people write a brand off so quickly. Imagine I was wearing a Patek, to them it would be less impressive than a non date Sub.

Sounds like a bunch of guys who aren't in the market for a product, don't have a clue about the price/worth of that product.

If and when they were to become interested in owning a premium watch, I expect that they would learn a bit more about the relative pricing of watches in the market segment they were looking to buy in.

Definitely.
It's not a bad thing, but it is when they start justifying why they would buy what they would! wink
I think most people at work can't work out why I wear a 35 or so year old watch. Especially when it has a plexi-glass crystal! wink

People who clearly (comparing omega to citizen) aren't informed about watches chatting nonsense about them isn't exactly surprising. It'd be like someone calling an MX-5 a hairdressers car.

Not everyone knows about watches, it isn't a big deal, so long as you know that what you're wearing is good and special then that's all that matters.

It's a bit like bicycles. If you're not interested in them it's hard to understand the difference between a £90.00 'MTB' from Aldi, and a £4000 bike from companies like Giant, Trek, Kona for instance. Occasionally I'll comment on a watch if I see someone wearing something interesting that I recognise. Most watch fanciers appreciate it, I reckon.

why should they know much about it? how much do you know about about fancy handbags.....or shoes, or remote controlled hover craft, etc, etc.

The average person in the UK would think it nuts to spend £2k on a watch so you cant expect many to be on your wave length.

T

(i have a PO 45mm...but quite understand that 99% of people will think it cost less than a seconda given that it stops if you dont wear it a couple of days!)

Handbags: now they're a subject I'm just learning about!!! Working with some twenty-something Asian girls at the moment and never knew that bags were so important / expensive / copied. It's a whole new world for me...

but you are talking about them being ignorant of a very niche interest of yours - i'm not sure where the satisfaction comes from? I am sure there are many things i know about (in my line of work or hobbies) that you are ignorant about...but i dont see where i'd derive any positive feelings from that?

Surely it's no different to people who have no interest in cars and know nothing about them either? Some people see a car as an appliance to get them from A to B and back again. Compare that to (IME) most people who see a watch as, at best, a functional piece of jewellery.

Because they're not correct, Citizen are not close qaulity wise to Omega.

However I'm not bothered, just astounded at why people think this. It only takes a glance into a shop window to see they're not cheap. Yet somehow these same people that know FA about watches know/think the Rolex are the balls. So strange.

because Rolex is a brand name that everyone is aware of...like Ferrari. My mum knows a Ferrari is expensive....she'd have no idea what a Veyron is though.

i keep marine fish.....i have a black tang, it cost me £600....i also have a yellow tang, it cost me £15. Did you know they are that much different in cost? If not...why not? How can you be so ignorant, it only takes a second to wander round a fish shop to see thats the case.....wow, people like you make me laugh - you have NO IDEA how the pricing of marine fish works - you suck.

Yes, but fish are not as mainstream as mens watches. And these people know enough about them to know brands. But its the perception that was odd, hence the thread. I'm not saying everyone needs to know about everything, but if you are talking like you know what you're on about its a bit weird to be talking such st smile

Because there are always people who fail to do their homework on seriously expensive purchases like a car, or even a business, and buy on the flimsiest of pretexts. There are those who buy 'brand' regardless of its qualities. And of course I get a delicious kick of superiority every time I hear of it.

But let them.... BRAND is as much of value as any other aspect of a purchase. My wife likes Tiffany jewelry....is a £10k Tiffany ring of the same quality as a £10k (lesser known brand) ring - no, probably not because some of that £10k is for the name/brand - but if that adds to the ownership experience then so what. Who is anyone to tell someone else that they shouldnt value you one aspect of a purchase (brand) but should value another (craftsmanship) - in the case of a watch...even more so - because all watches work as watch....anything beyond a £10 casio is about personal preference...you dont need £5k of "craftsmanship" in a watch anymore than someone needs a brand name on their wrist.

On one level, I'm not surprised - most people who have no interest in watches will think Cartier or Rolex is the best. However, I'm surprised that they haven't done more research given their jobs.
