Hatchback for 4k
Discussion
Getting a new car next month. Ive got 4k to spend excluding insurance, but nothing thats going to cost more than 2k to insure.
I was think something like:
Astra mk5 sportback
Clio Sport
BMW 316ti compact
The astra is the most to buy, but cheapest insurance. The clio is cheapest to buy, but the insurance is a lot more.
What would you suggest from those 3, if none what else is there?

316 is a terrible car, woefully underpowered for what they are to insure etc. Clio out of them or something like a Seat Ibiza Cupra, Skoda Fabia Vrs, Nissan Almera GTi, Pug 106 Rallye get a nice S2 in indigo blue and they hold Their value well

I would think the Astra is an aweful buy. Not very fast, not really a good drive and will continue to lose money unit at a rapid rate unit it's worth about 75 quid.I was think something like:

I think to give a better answer you need to tell us what you want from the car and why?
As in what will you use it for. Do you want it to be fun or fastish. Does it have to be new looking. Is image an issue.
As you are looking at 3 door hatches the. I'd assume praticality isn't really an issue. So how many seats do you really need. And are you going to be hauling much or anything specific. Sure the seats fold down in these. Butthe boot is pretty small on them all otherwise.
I only ask, as £4k is a fair chunk of money and you can buy some very nice, fun, interesting and even fast cars for that money or even only half the amount of money.

I don't like any of them. I was think something like:

The Astra is dull, the 316compact is almost the cheapest car BMW made at that time. If you want a BMW get one with a better engine. Clio is a Renault and although i'm sure a great car to drive old Renaults don't have a good reputation for reliability.
If I was in tbhe market for a hatchback in that price range i'd be looking at the Ford Focus.

Im looking for something thats a bit fun, doesnt have to be overly practicable, but does need a fairly big boot to fit my fishing box in. As in what will you use it for. Do you want it to be fun or fastish. Does it have to be new looking. Is image an issue.

It needs some sort of fashion statement, because i've had enough rip out of my rover!
I do quite like the focus 3 door.
If you are not after balls out performance a Focus is probably your best compromise.
I'd go for a 2.0 ESP, £4K will get you a nice MK1. I used to have a 1.8 Zetec, wasn't the fastest thing on the road with all of 113bhp, but it was a very responsive engine that loved to be revved and actually made quite a satisfying grunt for a 4 pot.
What it lacked in performance it made up for in handling, very planted, minimal body roll and precise. I would recommend one over an Astra any day.
Try and find one with a heated front windscreen an absolute god send in the winter.

The 1.8t isn't that fast so insurance should be reasonable, and that one looks fairly well equipped.

But try and look for one that's not been sold. The insurance shouldn't be too bad and they go well in a straight line and round corners too.
