Actually you'll go through a spell where there will be more leg room. With very young children their legs aren't long enough for them to reach over the seat squab and so they sit with their legs sticking out more. Once their legs get a little longer they'll drop down into the footwell where they are supposed to be.
Hmmmm. £30k will get you some differing options. As for practicality, the XF is the realistic option when compared with the XK, but which XK? Steel or aluminium? The steel has more room than the Ali, in the boot and rear. With the Ali XK a child in the back will significantly compromise the front seat leg room. If you will travel as 2 adults in the front, I don't think you will want to have a child in the rear. With the steel XK you can, just. With regard to depreciation, a £30k XK will have halved in value over 3 years, so you'll be looking at a 1st edition XK, or a run out steel XKR. A £30k XF will either be a prem lux 2.7D 2yr old XF or a lux 3.0. The XK will have more kit than a standard 3.0 XF but similar level to a 3yr old 4.2 SV8 (petrol). The XK is a far more fun car to own/drive, the XF I don't think will keep you wanting it, no matter how good it is. I would go for the petrol supercharged SV8 XF. The were£60k plus new, have top level spec/options and will give you that Jaguar vibe. Either that or buy a gorgeous Ali XK and send your daughter off in a taxi.

Last night I had two adult passengers for a short run in my 07 XKR convertible. With the roof up, the chap in the back seat had to keep his head bent forward or hit the roof lining. To allow just enough room for his legs, the front seat passenger had to pull the seat so far forward that his knees were pressed hard against the glove box. In other words, this is not something you would want to do very often or for very long.
A 3-yr old should be comfortable enough in the back seat though - but as soon as little legs start to outgrow the seat depth, any front seat passenger is going to have to give up some leg room.
Not much fun buckling a child in though. There isn't a lot of travel on the seat runners so you can't create enough of a void to do the job comfortably. Not sure if there's a manual override to the electronic seat position controls - if not, it's fiddly and slow so not ideal if regularly belting a child in the back.

Suitable for a 1-3 year old child maybe?A 3-yr old should be comfortable enough in the back seat though - but as soon as little legs start to outgrow the seat depth, any front seat passenger is going to have to give up some leg room.

Likewise, I've driven a few adults now in the back of my 07 XKR coupe. Not the most comfortable experience. However, 7 year old nephew loved it and we only had to move the passenger seat forward a few inches. Quite an echo on this thread eh!
I'm in a very similar predicament, except I have an XFS and we also have a family waggon in the form of an S Max, so the better half has given me the go ahead to get a fun weekender. Looking at a budget of about £35k I'm sorely tempted by the XKR ali, but am a tad concerned by the depreciation factor. If it's a car to keep for the duration the depreciation shouldn't matter but you never know what's around the corner!
Love the XK but also been looking at the TVR porn that's in the same budget.
