Tomorrow morning I'm due to go and pick up a 14-seater minibus (Transit) from Sheffield, for my parents.

It's a disability-adapted vehicle with a wheelchair lift in the back.

However, I've just realised that Im not legally entitled to drive it. I passed after '97 so only have categories B and B1 on my license, and I think the minibus needs category D1.

How do I add that category to my license? Do I need to pass some sort of test? If so, what can I expect? Is it costly?

Are you sure your not allowed to drive it, there are different rules with regards to whether your driving for hire or reward or not.

This page from direct.gov should explain the times and conditions that you are legally allowed to drive a minibus, even if you dont' have a D1.

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensi...

Basically, if you are driving it voluntarily, not for hire or reward, and have no paying customers, are over 21 and have held your car license for 2 years you should be fine smile.

Check the weight, many D1 vehicles won't be under the weight required for you to drive.
