Aircon re gassed to correct amount but struggling to cool down. System vacuumed etc. Yellow light on central knob comes on, clunk from engine somewhere, revs drop. Would appear at that stage that I should be getting cool air, but no. I have a notion that the temp control knob, which is tight to turn and likely to snap soon, isn't able to completely shut off the flow of hot water from the engine. Does this sound likely and is it common? If so, you're gonna tell me it's a nightmare to get to and I should spend the summer sweating my nuts off aren't you!
I tried running the aircon immediately having started the car from cold and it seemed ok even as the engine warmed up. Turned knob to hot & back and couldn't get it cold again.

Common problem, you are right when you say it might not be shutting off fully.
Underneath the car there is a small inspection cover, this is how you access the valve, usually it's either the cable that's stiff or just needs adjusting to fully shut the valve off.
To test the theory, get the car in the air remove the cover and with the control knob turned fully towards the cold position see if you can get any more movement out of the valve, usually a screwdriver will do it, then test the air con again.
Obviously if it's still the same then you have another problem somewhere, and I've not been of any help.
Good luck.

Thanks Steve, the car's up in the air for a few days right now for lower front ball joints. I'm gonna Hammerite the front chassis while it's up, so might aswell look for the valve at the same time. Cheers
