Hi,

My brother-in-law needs to refurbish the alloys on his 53 plate Gallardo.

He was going to drop it in to Lap Tab in Birmingham (http://www.lap-tab.co.uk/) for their same day service, but they don't want to take the car - mentioning something about jacking points.

I thought the next best thing to do would be to whip the wheels off and do it ourselves.

Question is - what is the general opinion on leaving the car stood with no wheels?? It can be secured on a gated drive, or garage so no problems there.

I have a low entry jack (2 ton) and four axle stands, would really appreciate some pointers on the best way to do this.

Alternatively, any other ideas - the brother-in-law lives in London during the week, but was going to bring the car up to Warwickshire to get this done.

There are dozens of places that will refurb wheels, some main dealers will want £160 per wheel and some people (one man bands) can do it for circa £35 a wheel. I use a guy/body work shop near heathrow who charges about £40/45 a wheel. Very good, efficient, trustworthy - let me know if you want his details.

Thank you. What he is really after is a proper powder coated finish, which Lap Tab will do. The main problem is leaving the 'stood' car without wheels whilst it is being done.

Might be too far for you but Lepsons in Kent do a cracking job. They strip the wheel back to bare metal before powder coating. I got 2 alloys done there about 2 years ago they took 4 days to do (they are always busy) cost £75 per alloy then.

I'm not a mechanic but I can't see why leaving the car jacked up should do any damage. I would take it to your local body shop to get done, I had one of the Gallardo's wheels done when it went into the main dealers for its service and I think it was £120 eek

Hi, my o/h did exactly what you are planning. Jacked up in garage, took wheels to Lepsoms for a complete refurb and colour change, now anthracite and fitted the new tyres whilst there at no extra charge. Look fantastic now

There shouldn’t be any problems leaving the car on axle stands for a few days, it is after all exactly the same thing that the wheel refurb people would do, were you to leave your car with them smile
