As the title suggests really, I have an '07 Ibiza and with the current weather the aircon has been on a lot. Is there a easy way of telling if the aircon needs regassing?

I dont think it is as cold as it was but the wife says its the same.

Also while im here, ive heard of people saying that some sort of filter in the aircos system, needs replacing every now and again. What is it and where would i find it?

The pollen filter needs replacing/cleaning every service (google it to find out where its hidden).

Some manufacturers recommend re-gassing the air-con every 18 months, but I'd just wait until it stops being cold enough tbh.

+1

I'd a signum recently and the air con was really naff - though in fairness it was lack of power moreso than coldness - and a £6 pollen filter made a world of a difference. An easy way to check if its pollen filter is to knock off the air con and have it on fans only - if its more powerful then it needs a new filter.

got a honda accord 03 and its as cold as the day we bought it 5 years ago.

However my saab cab (07) was not too cold so took it to quickfit last year. The machine "tests for leaks" so they filled it up, £45 and off i go icy cold. Roll on 2 weeks, its warmed up so obvious a leak. Went back and got a refund. Had main dealer check and confirmed it is damagaged so not on warranty. Had a look myself and the condenser is fubar'd, quite low and forward so its had a knock somehow.... Motto is, dont believe the sales banter. If its gone warm its probably got a leak

You can buy a can of gas and a gauge from halfrauds, at least then you can always keep an eye on it. I got one and when I checked my 12 year old Beemer, it was pretty much full! Checked a mates 06 Vectra and it was completely empty! As has been said though, check the pollen filter, you'll be amazed how filthy they get. I change mine every year, and it's still black when it comes out. Even though it's a serviceable item, mine had never been changed when I got the car at 5 years old, made a massive difference.

Sorry to bump this one lads, but i have another quick aircon question.

While on holiday last week in Dartmoor (the roads are ace, some lovely sweeping corners), we parked up in a nice little car par park to walk the woofers. As we walked away i noticed that some clear liquid was coming from the bottom of the car.

I looked underneath and it seemed to be coming from just underneath the bulkhead behind the engine. It was clear, didnt smell or taste of anything.

I thought it might be the aircon, does air con collect water/vapour then dump it?

My local garage only charges I think £65 for an air-con check and fill, so I am guessing they are not out to rip us off them looking at the Halfords price.

You can tell a lot about leaks by using your senses like that - especially if you know what the various fluids smell/feel/taste like.

In this case, it'll be water draining off the evaporator - just like you get condensation on a beer bottle, it condenses on the cold bits of the aircon. It has to go somewhere or you car would get heavier and heavier over time!

ETA: Halfords will test the pressure in your aircon for free. They did mine, and saved me buying a tin of refrigerant from them. Turns out my aircon is crap by design.

We only charge £65 for A/C recharge, and it usually takes 45 minutes as the machine drains the gas if there was any left, pressurises the system and puts a dye through it then you have to go round it with a UV lamp, as if there is any leaks they'll show.. Then it refills the system.

It always seems expensive, but its not really.

They'll probably do a better job than a can of gas anyway. A proper aircon check involves depressurisation to make it sure it holds vacuum and repressurisation to make sure it holds gas pressure, before attempting to refill.

If it fails either test, something is leaking and there's no point regassing.

No, it seems like a bit of a bargain actually when to re-fill it yourself costs £50 just for the can !
