You may already think this is a boring topic, but it gets worse. It’s about a Corolla...

... for those of you still left here is my dilemma. We need a car as a domestic appliance hence the choice of the Corolla. It needs to be big enough for us and the dog, reliable and up for a bit of abuse. We intend really to buy it, and keep it until it dies like a cockroach that’s finally too slow to scuttle off behind the fridge.

The question is do I have to succumb to diesel or not? It’s a choice between a 2.0 D4-D and the 1.6 petrol. Now the missus has a job that now and again means she has to travel long distances, meaning that 25-30,000 miles in a year is not unusual. A no-brainer perhaps given that the petrol does 40mpg and the diesel does 50mpg. But I’m kind of trying to avoid that by finding reasons that make this. For instance the petrol is chain cambelt, whereas the diesel needs a timing belt every 60K. You can really feel the weight of the diesel engine in the nose as well.

The diesel is a 55 plate T3 for £6k, the petrol is a 56 plate colour collection (interior no longer looks like just inside the event horizon of a black hole) for £7k – but I think there’s wriggle room in that one.
Sod it, what do I do? Succumb to the oily stuff or bite the fuel bullet and keep burning petrol?

The petrol will cost over £470 (roughly) more per year to fuel if she is doing 25k.

I'd have the diesel.

As an appliance the diesel should be better - plenty of torque and should have better residuals. It's hardly a car for enthusiastic driving anyway

I'd have a slightly older, slightly less economical but cheaper to buy petrol car. 25-30k is a lot of miles - a slightly bigger car would be nice.

I was looking for a 523 Touring... but then I found this hehehttp://pistonheads.com/sales/1690387.htm
