Leasing on from the BA thread....

Do you fellow PHeaders think that ANYBODY should strike? should nobody in this country be allowed to strike for what ever reason? Should all strike be made illegal?

No matter what an employer changes your terms and conditions of employment to, should you either put up with it, or leave? but under no circumstances should you ever be allowed to strike for your rights?

Seeing as there will always be somebody who will try and do your job for less money, should everybody always bend over and take one up the pipe from management and NEVER have the ability to strike?

I agree you should be able to strike if its justified. For example, your boss tells you to work Saturday as well as Monday to Friday, and will also cut your remuneration by 30%.

Do you put up with it, or strike if the big boys won't back down.

If a company is in financial st, as BA is, then to further damage the company is criminally irresponsible.

Unions like Unite are power hungry scum, they are not fighting for you at all, they are fighting for the money that BA staff pay them . . . . . . . . . . . . money that will stop as soon as BA is broken up.

And something tells me that you may have your thread creation privileges withdrawn shortly wink

If you are good at what you do, do it well and behave professionally I've always found the rewards are forthcoming. Hence striking not required.

Try to bring your company down because you are unhappy at changes needed to compete in the modern world - well, that's just stupid.

Perhaps you should first try negotiating when the opportunity is available rather than forcing your employer to impose changes unilaterally.

I thought I was unfairly treated at a previous employer... so I handed in my resignation.

Is the above 56 bedroom country pile modelled on a French chateau and complete with a bar stocked with finest wines and spirits -

a) owned by a capitalist fat cat and bought from the sweat of exploited workers

b) owned by a local authority and bought using the sweat of exploited taxpayers

c) owned by a trade union (their HQ) and bought using the sweat of exploited workers

Strike it lucky smile

It’s a fundamental human right to withhold your labour.

Definitely NO. Nobody has a right to a job. Why should someone else have to give someone a job or even keep them on if they decide not to? People are paid for their time to contribute to a business. If they are deemed not to be contributing then it should be the employer's sole decision whether to keep them on or not. They will have been paid up to that point for their time so the employee should have nothing to complain about as long as notice period etc have been applied.

I f an employee disagrees with this approach then they are free to start their own businesses and learn that the grass isn't always greener.

I think the rights of employees to strike should be protected. I'm not expressing an opinion on the BA case here, just saying that in principle, striking should be allowed.

Having said that, maybe companies should be able to fire the workers that choose to strike. If everyone went on strike, they wouldn't want fire their whole workforce but if it was only a rogue handfull, they would be entitled to get rid of them. Very complicated subject though...

sorry i'm not sure how far back in history your going but im talking about the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms act.

aka. health and safety, aka completely ruined the judicial system, aka ruined any economic advantage this country used to have.

human rights are great in principle, but everything has been taken too far...

Absolutley 100% correct, however it is also a right of the employer, to safeguard their business and the interests of their shareholders . . . . . . . . . . . in BA's case, vast amounts of it shares are either directly or inderictly owned by people using dividends or increases in value, to provide their retirement pensions.

I know its a Daddy or Chips question, but would you be happy to see your pension reduced, or would you prefer BA to be modernised and its staff to be paid fairly for they job they do, based on industry sector averages?

So your position is, that as a citizen you can have too many rights? hmmm fine point of view that is, so just how many rights should we have and who should get them? can we start excluding people from having certain rights?
